Anyone been a local hero in the snow?

Picked up an elderly chap who'd come a proper cropper falling over on an icy pavement and knocked the wind out of him. Lent him my thumbstick and walked with him back to his house and saw him safe indoors. Would happily have taken him in the Hippo except i have labyrinthitis and am lurching about as if p!ssed out of my brains so scarcely safe to drive!

I didn't venture out in my Defender but was tempted on Friday just to go up the steep hill out of the village. Mainly as it hadn't been gritted. The snow was compacted but not sheet ice.

Worried about coming back down more than anything as there is a small bridge with a stream going under it.

What is the process for going down a steep hill on snow/ice. I know when off road you should descend with diff lock engaged and in 1st gear. Is this still the case for icy roads where there could literally be 0 grip? Or is it a case of going up the gears trying to maintain a bit of engine braking when the wheels lock?

I don't think that many of the members who did turn out to help others during the recent bad weather really feel the need to blow their own trumpets, but respect and thanks to them all, they know who they are.
I do know that @allan downes was out ferrying nurses to and from their local hospitals and I beieve that our own @blue beasty was out doing a similar sort of thing too.

If possible, don't do it.

If you have to, engage low range second, go down not touching any pedals. Steer as best you can.
If you start sliding, steer into a kerb or snow bank if possible to slow yourself and regain control.

hi guys ive been out since friday about 20 of us in s e wales response 4x4 ferrying nurses to and from hospitals i was going from bargoed to rhymney and aberbargoed brynmawr and cwmbran it was very bad on the friday and saturday
the one mountain road was very dicy with the wind and i freelander and discovery sport came to grief they had a head on i could nt get a pic it was too dodgy to stop so i carried on the accident had happened earlier both were write offs heres some pix
