Not strictly true .. "However, since 25 May 2007, it has been an offence for bull bars that have not been approved as compliant with those safety standards to be sold." Which I read to mean a Bull bar cannot be made to be sold unless it complies with the safety standards. That doesn't mean you can't fabricate one for your own use.

Yeahh that surprised me..

General requirements
It is not illegal for vehicles to be fitted with bull bars, although the department would not recommend their fitment unless it has been shown, through compliance with specified safety standards, that they do not pose an additional risk of injury to pedestrians or other vulnerable road users.

There are no plans for legislation to require bull bars that are already fitted to be removed. However, since 25 May 2007, it has been an offence for bull bars that have not been approved as compliant with those safety standards to be sold. Approved devices will carry an indelible ‘e’ mark (eg ‘e1 01 1471’).

I thought they had taken a lot harder stance on it.

OP:- As it happens, I could make you a bull bar, but I wouldn't because of the spirit of the regs.
IMHO, have a re-think about what you are trying to achieve, and as @blue beasty said so eloquently above, make sure you remember to notify your insurers, and consider doing so whilst sat down ;)

I told Flux my tubular winch bumper where bull bars (was me first year having a landy :) ), they charged me and extra £70 initially, but the old rep on here got that refunded. So insurance may well be alright with it, I know Direct Line flat out refused as did Admiral.

Our '88 110 is insured with Admiral, agreed value so photos were supplied for their reference and use, she is fitted with a bullbar, not issues, no 'premium on top' and both our cars are insured fully comp, protected no claims, the 110 on agreed value of £6k and I think we pay £70 odd for the pair of them on a multicar policy.

I told my ins company that I had fitted a fairety pto winch to the 90 and the same to the series no cost to em at all, they only asked one question are the winches used commercially?:D
The 90 one especially has a massive galved C section front bumper, I can vouch for its strength of it as can the guy who pulled out in front of me and I removed the front of his car!
The series front bumper is also h/d modded for the winch.
Neither car is pedestrian friendly.

On the externals of a car Eg bodywork bumpers etc what can you do and when does it be the case you'll get prosecuted for like negligence like could make your own bumper easy but say you hit someone and kill em they'll obviously say that's not standard or sold etc...

My Mate is a Blacksmith and he's making me a full bumper with bull bar on it. If you can wait a bit I'll send pics and if you like it you can order one.

That would be great to send some pictures once it is fitted, after doing some research if the bull bar has space for a winch and has a winch, it is then not classed as a bull bar so is therefore legal although please feel free to correct me.

Cool, where did yu find that information?

Cheers

I have been speaking to someone who used to make them, he said that as long as the bull bar is welded to the winch bumper, in the eyes of the law the whole bumper is classed as a winch bumper which are not illegal. However you do need a winch on them otherwise it is then classed as being illegal.

Although I dot know anyone who has had a problem with a wrap around bull bar on their defender.

Here in Portugal inspection \mot centres are government licenced non repair drive through buildings ,they I hear ,are now failing any outside accessories that are non vehicle manufacturer supplied bars\winchs extra lights and snorkels don't know about roof racks.
We have never been able to alter tyre or wheel sizes or tint Windows if it's not on the cars papers.
But there's certain ways around somethings just depends where you leave the 20€ note! until traffic cops do a road side stop though!!

We got pulled in Slovakia for driving with no lights ( daytime ) in my mates UK Navara. As it was a brand new model on UK plates they assumed we were minted and tried 'fining' us €300. They hadn't spotted our wives in the back, both Slovakian, who basically told them we won't do it again, but we won't be paying the fine as we'd go straight to the cop shop and snitch on them and then tell the news channel. Thought it was a risky ploy, but it worked!

Sorry to hear you had such an experience and good that you didn't take the police's ****. You have to be quite firm with the police over here, when you politely stand your ground they always back down. Other than that hope you liked Slovakia :)

I like the Slovakina cops.

1st fine for turning iirc left at a (hidden) no left turn sign in the ctr of Bratislava, Cost equivalent of £20.
2nd fine for entering on the autoroute from CZ, without a Vignette, started at £300 , Slovakian GF had a word or two, reduced to buy a new vignette and £15. Strange it was the same car I had driven out of Slovakia 24 hours earlier....................:rolleyes:.......on the same autoroute and the vignette was not mentioned.

Cheers

I've been about 15 times so I must like something! Going again for a week or two in August, leaving the missus there with the kid for a few weeks and coming home on my own for a few weeks of peace and quiet, result!
