Anybody fitted intercooler from another vehicle

We have a 1989 Defender with a Discovery 300tdi and running gear fitted,
Just wondering if anybody has fitted a larger intercooler to one from another vehicle (obviously with some adaptation).
I know there are 'off the shelf' parts available from tuning companys, but they seem a hefty price (due to development costs perhaps), but being a maintenance engineer, I enjoy a little challenge getting things to fit.
I have had a good 'Google', but only seem to see people fitting the expensive aftermarket ones. Is this answering my own question perhaps?
