just days away now from getting my 54 plate Freelander 1.8. i have read umpteen articles/posts on the HGF's and can honestly say i'm bricking it somewhat.

i know the HG on this one was replaced at about 28k (now done 57k) as i have seen some receipts. no indication as to what type of HG was put in ( recommended MLS!) Now onto my question.

Rover or landrover must have put in differing HG at different times as the years went on and improved the life expectancy in the process. does anyone know what engine numbers were more suseptable than others or if a certain engine number was factory fitted with the recommended HG at "birth"?

im guessing the earlier ones had the largest proportion of issues on this front but would like some re-assurance.

Some Elise owners don't bother fitting the MLS they use the polymer/steel original gasket even now.
There is no gaurantee with this engine so if it aint broke don't fix it :)
Buy it and enjoy, just keep an eye on the fluids.

All you can go on is the paperwork - I have a very good mate with a K series engine in his Lotus and he's no problems so fingers crossed for you. When they work they're very good.

Any second hand motor is a gamble - I hope this one pays out for you

I have just got a 1.8 ES for £280 pound we dropped a replacement engine in and its running fine. The new engine ( second hand ) cost £360 with all the other bits and bobs its still a lot of motor for less than £1000 pound. Enjoy yours and dont worry i'm sure the engine will be fine.

i wouldnt be worrying too much about the engine because if its gonna go then its gonna go but make sure the vcu and ird are good. take it round a fast right hand bend and put your foot down so load is put on the prop and listen for noises the odds are the prop issues will cost you more than the engine if their dodgy.
