I'm considering a P38 for sale locally, so if there's any experts nearby who would be willing to give a second opinion on it with me it would be greatly appreciated - happy to buy you a beer in return for your time, of course!!

Well if you had more than one it would be illegal to drive home afterwards...?

Some of these faults take a bit of pondering over which sometimes, involves an over night stay to confirm the results of the previous days work.....

Plus a test drive in day light.....

Is it for sale in a dealers or privately ? How much MOT does it have, if less than 6 months why not spend £45 on an MOT, whether you buy it or not thats not a bad deal for an independent but limited inspection ?
Did it have any advisories on last 3 MOT`s and can you track the service history to see they all got fixed ? Is it FSH and does it look genuine ? Is it HPI`d ?
If its a dealer do they have a good reputation, check their ebay score and any independent reviews on the net, particularly Autotrader. Can you contact the previous owner off the V5 - that is usually the single biggest factor in making yourself feel comfortable or uncomfortable depending on what they say and how they say it ?
P38`s are usually an awful lot of car for the money but its easy to buy a bad one (in terms of costs to fix relative to final value), their relative complexity means faults may be difficult to spot, particularly if intermittent.
I generally try to help people but I genuinely wouldn`t want the responsibility of giving someone a second opinion on a p38 where there are so many variables.
An AA or RAC inspection is relatively cheap, warranties are also relatively cheap, joining the RRR is an option, even driving the car to a local independent for a quick once over is an option. I think I`d go down the routes above if I were you, sorry if that is not what you wanted to hear

Forgot to add that John Curtis, who used to be Chairman of the RRR, runs a garage in Holmer Green, Bucks - he might be worth a shout
Bit further away would be Peter Harris Mayes at Harris Mayes Country Cars in Rickmansworth, Herts - 01923 711800
And no I`m not on commission - wish I was.....................

OK - here goes! It's at a local independent dealer, he took it in part-ex against an X5. The car only has service history up to 60k, has then been home serviced by the last owner for the past 10 years/100k miles. I have check the MOT log online and it passed every MOT on record (back to 2006) with no advisories, ever. Last MOT'd in March this year. I have contacted the previous owner, seemed like a nice older guy, pretty honest and straight forward and it sounds like the car has been well look after if not pampered - i.e. serviced and parts replaced when needed, e.g. EAS compressor and all four airbags, but not cleaned daily!!

All in I think i'll go for it as I think it is a sound car and it drives very well!!

you had one didnt you m8?, gas it- job done

I had a V8 Classic alright - that managed 11mpg, had wet footwells and a tempermental speedo!!

I want to drive to Morocco so LPG will A) not be available and B) likely cause the old V8 to overheat!! Gotta be a diesel...
