guys. we ve a 99 dse 120k on her , van aiken power box and all s well, was wondering could i get any more power without huge money, if i removed t vis fan would i achieve any extra, thanks

A properly working viscous fan shouldn`t use much power anyway. That`s why they`re fitted rather than permanent fans, so as not to use energy pushing air until hot, and needed. If it is locked up it will drain power, and as Datatec says a thermostatically controlled electric fan is a better option. Only worth a coula horses or 2% of your power so hardly noticable.
As Dean says de-egr is gonna find a bit more power,at little cost.
Air filter? Better off (easier and less messy) changing a paper one frequently yhan cleaning an expensive permanent one IMHO.
Obvious things like making sure air & fuel filters are clean, intercooler is cleaned out all make liitle improvements that add up.
Don`t waste money on air-swirl-pipe things. If it was that easy the factory would do it from new!

I was thinking of an EGR removal kit to remove any air intake restiction to see if that improved low down power. Will it make a difference though as the air has to pass through the inter cooler which seems quite restrictive anyway!

thanks data, is it worth it, i normally dont fix if its not broke,

Using the aircon fans for cooling on the diesel makes sense to me, £15 for a stat and a box to mount it, a couple of cable ties and a length of wire.
Gives quicker warm up and an improvement in economy particularly on short runs in cold weather. As the engine warms up quicker it should also reduce wear.
The car is also noticably quieter.:D
Hardest job is removing the viscous fan.

Sorry, but not quite with you Dean. as I understand it the EGR system (which is there to help with cutting smoke) is ok when new, but can become choked with carbon etc and reduce power. Taking it off and blanking the hole on the exhaust must be accompanied by fitting a plain hose on the inlet, not one with a smaller hose branching off to allow exhaust into the inlet. I think this is on hose between intercooler and inlet manifold? Don`t know if I`ve said that clearly? Or have I got it wrong? Again.

Ere Datatek....
Do Rangies have those silly plastic bungs in the radiator/thermostat housing?
Coz if so - just fit a thermostatic switch in there operating a relay. I think yu will need a relay, coz the fans have to be switched via 2 sources - the thermostatic switch and the ECU/BECM???

A common trick (seen on many BMW forums)is to insert a 1p between the EGR valve and the pipe which bolts to it which carries the gas . This blanks it off. Or buy a bypass kit off EBAY which replaces the EGR valve with a strait through tube

The fans are operated by the dual pressure switch which operates the 2 fan relays so no additional relay is needed although I used one. The stat goes across the dual pressure switch so either the aircon or the engine temperature can operate the fans. The BECM is not involved, nor at the point I break in is the HEVAC so the car's ECU's are unaware of the change.
I prefer to use an external temperature sensor taped to the top hose, it is not affected by corrosion or silting up. I also prefer an adjustable stat.:D

have t egr blanked off, but not with a penny ,they not here any more ,i just removed t vaccum hose and blanked it off, if it s only worth 2% i wont bother for now as all is working ok, t air con fans sounds good i ll get that info from ya data in t further, has anyone fitted a bigger intercooler to a dse.
