My 2.0 diesel temp gauge constantly shows just over the halfway stated in the handbook, in fact it runs at 3/4.
Now there is no sign of over heating, there has been no coolant loss in the 700 miles i have done in her, and there is no "bubbeling" in the resevoir, but i do not think the heater is very warm.
Any ideas or experiences anybody?

Thanks for that Lads, i will look into it, i did wonder if it needed beeding, but the heater control should be a quick and easy check, and one i never thought of, thanks again.;)

sounds poss like an air lock to me. try running it for some time without the cap on. make sure its nice and hot then put the cap back on whilst its still running.

I thought air lock too. I know Freelanders have had problems with the heater matrix in the past. On cold mornings my engine temperature gauge says the engine is lovely and warm but the heaters do seem to take ages to produce heat. They get there in the end thou0gh.
You've got to love these British cars and their quirky problems ;)

Tried running with the cap off as Ormus suggested, this seems to have increased the heater temp. but the gauge is still showing quite high.
Do these 2.0 diesels still have thermostats?

Driving like this doesn't that cause that water be spilled by the movements of the car ??

Oh, you mean have it run on idle, that's what I regularly do these days, the week before Christmas I was doing a long trip in Luxemburg and ended up in the middle of nowhere to fill up with gas, I asked the guy if he could add some coolant as it looked pretty low. A couple of weeks later I saw all coolant fluid on the garage floor, it ended up the gasket of my thermostat blew, after it was replaced (new thermostat) I was told the coolant left in was smelling funny, it ended up it seemed to be petrol (gas) which ate up the rubber gasket, after they cleaned the circuit with a special product they rinced it 2-3 times but the subtance was still rather foamy and looking redish they said, so the repair was done without warranty as the headmechanic had not much of faith in things, coolant fluid still smelled rather funny and almost like gas. So since then when coming home I open the cap of the coolant bottle in the hope the smell evaporates (as well as the possibly remaining gasparticles in the coolant fluid), also had it run a couple of times already for some 10 - 15 minutes, with the cap open and the waterpump pumping round the water, the smell of it is now more or less neutral or as coolant should smell (i think/hope), but what I did in the past couple of weeks was to stop the engine while the cap was still open so now I leave it running when I come home and I close the coolant bottle while it's still running, hope now there won't be any airlocks created in the circuit by all this.
