hi could any one give me an idea as to whats possable wrong i have a 2.5 na deisel 110 it starts fine with bit of smoke plenty of power if i rev it blue/white smoke appears then clears under load it is constant if i blip the throttle it appears then clears if i rev hard there is nothing dose not over heat no coolent loss no oil in water ect ect ? any ideas please thanks
 
turbo bearings may be letting oil through. remove air box pipe. (flexi one on the intake side of the turbo) and wiggle the impellor shaft. anything mor than about 1-2 mm of play and that could be the problem. if the shaft is really really sloppy don't start it again because landy td engines are known for running on thier own sump oil with catastrophic results.:eek: that would be my first port of call but only a guess!

Make sure your breather pipe from rocker cover to manifold is clear.

When looking at it, see if there is gungy creamy emulsion in it. Bad if there is.

But the blue / white smoke you desctribe is probably engine oil being burned. Oil can came UP past the pistons, or DOWN past the valve guides.

Get the engine warmed up and ask a chum to follow you on a run down the local dual carriageway. Cruising along at 45 mph on as little throttle as you can get away with, if it starts trailing a bit of blue-white smoke it's time to think about rings and valve guides.

On full throttle the smoke usually clears because it gets disguised due to there being so much more exhaust gas to dilute it.

so should you be worried about blue/black under heavy loads then? the guys on my laning trip today said mine was running a little blue up hills and under load. got me worried :(

Naaah..... don't worry about it.
If it's going fine leave well alone. Laning trips slosh oil about more than driving on the flat and can leave more than usual amounts of oil in the rocker-box for example. And you are using very low speeds, light throttles with harder bursts, all calculated to make an older engine seem a bit oily.

A little blue is perfectly ok in a N/A diesel, but if it's a turbo engine or a petrol engine, you need to keep an eye on it.

Black sooty smoke under heavy load is over-fuelling, which is wasteful, and causes a slight power loss. It also clogs your silencers like crazy, and is very unhealthy. Very careful injection timing (of a diesel) will make it better.
 
cheers CharlesY. peace of mind, thank you :D yer its a n/a im running too. i suspected over fueling. im going to give the pump timing a go soon. ive printed out the thread you gave details on about timing the inj. pump. will do my tappets 1st then tackle the pump. ive managed to avoid doing anything with the engine so far but i guess its time i tried to understand it.

These engines are really incredibly simple, and they obey all the laws of physics too!

Do the valve clearances nicely, and play with the pump timing VERY carefully.

These engines are usually "timed" just by setting every one of them to the same marks. But every engine is different, every injector is different, and most importantly every injection pump is an individual thing too.

NO-ONE can take your car and time it "according to the book" and make it go as well as one of us (you?) could nake it go when we set the timing exactly where YOUR combination of parts want to be.

I have a Hartridge injector tester here, and I can tell you all, setting injector pressures right can make a tremendous difference. Sometimes these settings slip a bit after many trillions of miles, and as it is so easy to set them right, why not?

Anyone near enough me who cares to bring injectors here I will re-set them on the spot - free apart from a little money.
