Any help guys

I have a 2002 land rover freelander td4 i have just changed the fuel filter due to a starting problem and it being smokey it will start in the morning and will smoke until it is up to temp which means i have to leave ticking over for a while or i cause problems on the road for the cars behind me once i switch it off and leave it for wee while and try and start it it takes a bit to fire up again any idea's to what is causing this thank for you time lads

Have you checked the Crankcase Breather at the back under engine cover. A lot of full services forget this filter. Some like mine have been adapted to the BMW mod. Also check you servicing schedule when this was done. Another would be get a good quality Diesel cleaner and give the engine a good run.

i have ordered all new filters i take it you mean the small cylinder type filter down by the air filter

Yarp! Take care with the fuel return line and when you pull the injector leads. The screws are torx set. the filter will have a kit with seals to replace the old ones. Not to sure if the BMW mod is still available.

Yep it’s a must do it's a do once and forget about it till you change the air filter again. Then just wipe it out, simples

I have been told that it has a mod filter in it so i will order a new one of these and change it or as madmustang says clean it out

Just a thought, What happens when you disconnect the MAF sensor?

What colour is the smoke? Could it being burning oil?

Not sure why being warm would stop it burning oil though.

It sounds like it’s over fuelling and the MAF isn’t injecting the correct fuel air mix when cold. By disconnecting the MAF senor it will run a default program and that will either confirm or rule it out .

The smoke is a grey blue colour not sure what that means i'll do a check and see where the MAF sensor is

It should be plugged into the inlet manifold at the front of the engine. Looks like the image (See Attached) with a pipe going into it. You should be able to unplug the multi connector to disable it. I can’t remember if you should disconnect the battery first so I would just in case.

Is the EGR valve still active? If so that could be the cause of the smoke.
The MAF sensor is at the rear of the engine on the end of the air filter.

Yes just realized I said the front Doh!

Thanks for the input lads the egr valve has been blocked off, can the MAF sensor be replaced without having the car remapped or even cleaned thanks for the image that has really helped alot

Yes it can but try disconnecting it first to see if thats the issue. After that you are going down the HPFP leading to injector rabbit hole.

There's a few posts on here and around the web about cleaning MAF sensors, most seem to suggest giving it a good spray with WD40 electrical contact cleaner (https://www.wd40specialist.com/products/contact-cleaner) which they sell in Halfords, or a specific MAF sensor cleaner product. You can find youtube videos showing how it's done too.

If the MAF signal has reduced through oxidation of the hot wire. No amount of cleaning will help.

Yep just plug and play, Make sure you disconnect the battery first or you will cause further issues with something else
