only way to maximise your ground plane is to drill t' roof.

the bracket in question to fit aerial to spare wheel mount was for freelanders, as it curved around the back of the tyre and cleared the high level brake light bracket. might fit another though, depending on the spare wheel mounting arrangement. the guy selling them puts one on ebay every couple of weeks or so.

use a mag mount for me cb, then I can remove all trace when I'm in town so the scallies don't get too inquisitive.

Or you could pull a really big steel trailer and put the aerial on there..!!!!
but i suppose you could use a mag mount for HF "as cb is 11meters" and put the 40M one there

Redhand i think optimus was talking relative to the little bracket on the wheel carrier. Not saying that mag were crap.

If you have the aerial on the wheel mount the strongest lobe will be to the front of the vehicle and act like a yagi, oppersite if mounted on the front.

If the CB is having crap SWR, you need to check the swr on channel 1 and 40 and take the best you can get. You may have to move it around and if not a pretuned whip you'll have to cut it.

Also it's not an electrical ground that you need, it's the biggest amount of metal you can get under it. Easier to tune then

i weren't saying that the other ways weren't acceptable, but fact remains for absolute best results, you can't beat drilling the roof and mounting it direct.

fact is, no one wants a bloody hole in the roof that will leak in time, and we go to other methods

my mag mount works fine for what i need, and indeed for what most of us want, as do gutter mounts and so on. the difference between a properly set up mag or gutter and a roof mount is marginal, and when do any of us use the set right on the edge of it's range ?

How do you find the SWR on the ATAS antenna, I've never used one.
Is this the one where you can tune remotely or do you have to get out the car and use the fly lead?

Stu
The ATAS works well on all bands, reasonable VSWR and is auto-tuned with the radio menu. It does not cover 80mtrs. However at over £200 it's overpriced. Unless you really need the Yaesu auto feature I would go for one of the High Sierra antennas, with it's seperate small control unit, and coverage of 80mtrs.

I couldn't agree more!!

I think the High sierra antennas are well over 100 notes as well. I think I might just go for a 20M mobile or sit down and see what I can afford...

I have a Yaesu dual-bander mounted in the centre console (removable face plate) and a CB also - but that's only put in the car when required for off roading.

I have a dual band 1/4 wave antenna on a roof rail mount for the Yaesu, and a large removable whip on a custom grille mount for the CB.

I do like the way that is setup. GB3CR "Mold" never used that repeater and do drive down the A55 a few times a year. Maybe I'll get a dual bander and we'll have a chat.

On the first photo, is the head unit powered by the cigi socket???

Stu

Hi there - No, it's not powered by the ciggy socket - that is just a power cord for something else. It's wired directly to the battery to reduce interference.

Call is M3IYL
