Hey there, I'm fairly sure you've had many of these before but everyone likes their own thread about their own thing so here I go

1974 3 series 2.25 Diesel engine, hard top, etc etc blah blah.

It has some custom electrics in it (previous owner put reverse lights on it Hoooray!!!) And despite missing a radio it does have an antenna for a CB one or a regular one (I can't tell)

Anyway the point.

Fuel tank is full of crap, should I have it drained out? Basically it can't go below about a quarter of a tank or the crap will be sucked into the diesel filters and wahey more problems. So Should I drain it out? (if I have to I'll post up another thread on it when the time comes)

Gearbox; has an overdrive but doesn't like going out of overdrive at times, not sure why.

Please note I am unsure of the specs of any of the gearbox parts, transfer box parts or engine. I shall however be looking and finding out soon!

Right the "big one" so to speak

The engine; I think everyone wants a faster one in the long run and I'm planning ahead with this. Not neccesarily after a V8 but I'm open to suggestions, mainly after a bit more top speed (pushes 60, has larger than stock wheels and tyres on so the speedo underreads annoyingly) and generally it'd be nice to have a bit more oomph.

So what do I need? Let's treat me like the newbie I am right here and tell me in small steps and picture colouring books what I need :)

Anyway any help is appreicated plus anything you want to know I'll post up ASAP as soon as I know. My uncle is going to help me on some parts (Suspension is a bit iffy, possibly due to the larger tyres but who knows, I bet someone here does!)

Cheers guys

N.

Right your first mistake is to think big engine big speed
The only way to make ANY vehicle go faster is by altering gear ratios and tyre size
Becouse 5000 revs is the same in any engine ok a big v8 will rev higher but unless you wanna be screaming the nuts of it as you drive you will still only do 60mph
Have a look at fitting a newer tdi engine with a 5 speed gearbox and some higher ratio axles also the big tyres will give a bigger rolling circumfrence making everything a bit faster still
Just bear in mind that the more you play with tyres and ratios the further out your speedo will be so it either has to be recalibrated or do what I did and fit a tom-tom (speedo isn't part of mot)

Bollix will it. Higher reciprocating mass! a smaller engine will rev higher. Why do yu think F1 cars use 3 litre V12;s?

sorry to butt in F1 engines 2.5 V8 max REVS 18000 don't you just love the sound of a V8 almost as good as the smell of 2 stroke petrol

Power output and top speed are 2 different things
The reason an f1 will 200mph is because the rev seven bells ps ****e out of them
What you gotta think about is it dosnt matter what engine you put on a series gearbox at 3000rpm you will get exactly the same mph
Ok a v8 will rev higher than a tdi but you don't drive down the motorway revving at 6000rpm
Speed at the wheels is dictated by the ratios between the gearbox input shaft and the circumfrance of the wheel
This is why people fit overdrive for motorway cruising because it alters the gearbox out speed therefore reducing the engine speed required at a set speed and giving the avalibility for higher top speed with the same rpm as before

wots that gotta do with it - yu stated "a big V8 will rev higher". that aint tru - the bigger the engine size, the bigger the reciprocating mass and the lower it tends to rev. Sure doozils tend to rev lower, but not all. Some, notably the 5.5/6.0L V12's of the Le Mans series rev to 6-6.5K

Why are you bringing great bog race engines into a land rover forum
We started with the difference between v8 and NORMAL deisels
Yes race deisels rev high but can you a: get hold of a race engine and b: will it fit into a s3
We are all getting a bit off track here

Ok advice taken in, I didn't assume a larger cyclindered engine would rev higher, I assumed it'd produce more overall power and therefore be able to power a (higher? lower) ratio'd gearbox with more ease than the regular 2.25 diesel engine that's currently in it, it seems to make sense or is that just too much work for no reward?

empty the tank and fit a 200TDi - that seems to be the most common and easiest swap. Several peepson here have done it -some will even often to do it for ya (at a cost)

I'm in agreement for a change
Stick in a 200tdi as that will give good mpg with good torgue
But also fit a 5 speed lt77 gearbox with either the series transfer box or upgrade the axles as this will give good mph
