I had the prop bearings done (parts from BritPart) a few weeks ago along with the front pads (Mintex I think) and since then (unless had the stereo on too loud beforehand to of noticed) Im getting a strange noise from under neath.

Definatly sounds like below the gears and handbrake or maybe back of the engine.

Cant seem to hear it at speed as engine/wind noise/rattles in the back may drown it out.

It was MOT'd a couple of weeks ago, so would assume all the suspension and stuff is OK (I watching him with a pry bar at everything).

How accuratly lined up do the prop bearings need to be? I have had the 2 bearings loosened and tightened them back up to the marks left by the old bearing supports (if that makes sense) but to no avail.

The VCU and IRD seem to be fine (goes through muddy fields and up hills like a good un) as I think are the rear diff mounts. I used a pry to have a look about the mounts and no obvious damage to an untrained eye.

Any thoughts?

Sometimes the prop support bearings can collapse because the VCU isn't working properly.

If it has siezed then it will go off-road fine as the front and rear drives are 'locked' together, similar to central diff lock in a coil sprung LR (Disco, RRC or Defender).

If you remove the prop shaft completely you will still be able to drive, so this would be a good test and see if the noise stops.

Did you get the bearings on the right way round? A mate of mine has a garage and he did prop bearings for somebody. The car came back in with reports of funny noise from below. He borrowed mine and came to the conclusion that he had fitted them the wrong way round. Swapped round and everything ok! I've not had mine done so not from personal experience.
