Another starting problem

When I turn the key I only get a click, but if I leave ignition on and run a wire from the starter solenoid to the battery she starts. What do you think it could be? Its a 94 auto 300 tdi without the spider unit. A mate suggested just putting a switch on the dash bypassing the other stuff because these faults are difficult to cure.
