Today whilst driving to and from work at several random times my engine would seemingly missfire for between 30 seconds and a minute. This caused my speed to drop sharply from between 50 mand 60 to 30 which it would stay at as my Disco skipped along.
What on earth could be wrong?
I have recently had alot of work done on the engine;
Fuel injection pump replaced.
Timing bely replaced.
Aircon drive belt removed.
Stripped head and sent for skimming.
Rebuilt cylinder head and refitted.
Water pump found to be leaking when engine started.
Replaced water pump.
Engine oil
Oil filter
Antifreeze
Head skim
Head gasket
Head bolt x4
Injector seal x4
Valve cover gasket
Intake gasket
Water pump
Pump gasket
Or could it be something else?

Sounds to me like an interrupted fuel supply. It could be, in no particular order:
Fuel lift pump on it's way out;
Fuel filter blocked;
Sedimenter blocked;
Air leaking in via one of the fuel pipes or at the tank sender

It must be very frustrating at the mo - and quite expensive by the looks of that lot. Did a garage do the work? If yes - take it back!! You wanted it fixing, not just playing with.

I'm assuming that it's a TDi btw, is that right?

Yes, its a 1994 Discovery 300 Tdi and yes it has been quite expensive, £1500 for Landie and so far £1000 for repairs after only 7 months of ownership!

After all of this work being done I was kinda hoping that nothing else was left to go wrong. :(

Hi Kev, was it you that had some repairs done by a garage to do with headgasket and it came to about, from memory, £630-ish?

I'm curious, why do you replace the injection pump? Of all the diesels I've known I have never come across a genuinely-bust injection pump. Broken enough to require replacement. It would have stuck in my mind as they are NOT cheap!!

Was it part of the work you had done to solve this poor-running problem?

When you get her fixed and running right you won't know what to do with yer sen.:p :D

I had to replace to pump because it was leaking diesal into the engine bay quite badly. To be honest I knew it would need replacing when I bought Disco and should really have taken it as a sign of what was to come not as a minor inconvenience that should have been easy to sort. <sigh>

Kev, you mentioned the garage had found some damage to tops of pistons caused by fragments of gasket.Could it be that?

The damage only(?) consisted of some scratches about 1mm deep so I wouldn't have thought so, anyway I have been driving for just under 200 miles since work done before the kangarooing started.

It just so sounds like it's fuel related somehow. Can't remember, you have changed the fuel filter? Cleaned the sedimenter? Checked the tank-top connections for rust/leaking? Checked the lift pump for proper operation?

What about (if you have access to one) connecting a high-pressure air line to the tank ends of the fuel lines and blowing through to the disconnected front ends? to ensure that they are clear?

What about the tank breather, is it clear and functioning correctly?
