Me mate went on a good run today in his 95 4.6 with no probs and temp gauge at half way (always has been) picked a big caravan up and it overheated on the m'way, he pulled over straight away checked the coolant of which there wasnt any in the expansion tank, he called the aa amongst other things checked the oil of which there was very little in, the oil and water was topped up and the aa checked temps while it was plugged in and all was fine and he carried on his journey with advice from aa to do an oil change asap, while driving back the red light came on half way up a steep incline so he turned heater up to full and temp stayed ok till he got back, The oils fine and there was no coolant loss, im no mechanic but have dabbled in the past.. the water in the expansion tank looked dirty/contaminated and ive advised him to change the thermostat and flush the system to start with as the 'liner slip' and 'porous block' from what ive read on here and the net seem to come with coolant loss of which there was none when he got back home... the aa said cos the oil was very low it may have caused the coolant loss when it overheated... what do you reckon?

would hydro testing confirm slipped liners and/or porous block?, how'd ya go about the liner repair? and costs?

a hydro will confirm products of combustion in the coolant only, you will need to combine the results with other factors such as oily water or watery oil, exhaust discharge etc.

to repair the liners with top hat liners you are looking at around 100 per cylinder, then you need other parts, rings deffo, possibly pistons if they are ok tho you can get just rings and have the liners bored to standard!

The coolant system has been cleaned flushed and a new thermostat fitted, the temp remains at half way with no signs of anything wrong all looks to be as it should be, The engine does seem hot but like i say theres no evidence of anything wrong.

yep, thats how mine went, overheat foloowed by normal conditions followed by sudden loss of cooland and the rest it history!!! get it checked and see what it says, only cost around 20 quid!

I thought the same, its gonna be tested at the garage next door to our yard but ive told him to expect the worse, Cheers Gav

Right, we had the hydro test done last night and all was ok, theres no water/oil/water mix and no other symtoms so we've took the water pump off and on removal noticed excessive play in the bearing, the pump was fitted using sealant and there was quite a bit in the channels so we ordered a new pump collected it and then found the gasket was supplied split so we've gotta wait till 4.30 to get new gasket... will let you know how we get on.

Fitted the water pump last night, it took a while to refill cos of air lock, seemed fine last night but had a slight miss-fire, replaced the leads this morning and its fookin great... me mates over the moon.
With the amount of posts regarding overheating i doubt anyones interested but there you go :D:D:D but aint it nice to hear its not slipped liners or porous block
