Another newbie looking for guidance on 88s

Hi all my names Steve & I need help as I'm due to look at 1970 so 88 sat on a rangerover chassis.
Its had a lot of mods ie changed to coil suspension,200tdi engine,rear tub has been shortened a bit.
Will this still be classed as mot & tax exempt still as I want to use it on the road.
If I buy it my plan is a bit of restoration, not concourse but tidy
Any thoughts gladly received
 
Welcome to the lumphammer users on vehicles restoration. With buying you may fall foul of modification issues on insurance. As for classic status not sure this would qualify anyway as the criteria would be more the originality than modification. It like putting on a period costume on today actor and saying the character is alive today. I'm happy to be stand corrected and have my bottom smacked.
 
Hi Saxavordian thats kind of my feeling too...I want to buy a short wheelbase land but they all seem to be oop north & I'm in the sunny sarf...on the South Coast...just don't want to get stung...I spent most of my life fixing broken transits that came off the end of the production line in Southampton until we all got kicked out
 
Worth having a look around being the safe bet. Classic tend too pricey due to the rarer and spares getting smaller. but before the Lockdown with landrovers shows dotted around the country, good contacts was the norm. still though you could put feelers via some of the club's. Military sales of are good source too.

Thats what I've started to do ...it doesn't have to be an historic land just a good base to start from

Yes and no, you will need to do some research, Iirc if the mods that may stop it being exempt were done pre 1997 then you are still good to go.

That could be good news...not sure if owner knows when mods were done as he's only had it 2 years & has been a bit vague in his description

Well he is most likely being vague as he just wants to sell it and let any problems become yours,
Is it on a proper plate/age related plate or a Q plate?

I think engine is only worth 1 point, chassis and axles are the main thing, body irrelevant.

Research is the thing, any of the car specific forums mght get snooty about it being bit of a heinz 57, pistonheads has some very knowledgable people on it.

Thanks for all your replies I decided on this 90 ....it comes with a load of new spares...some of which I'm going to sell on to fund the bits I want to get
