hi i am new to the forum and need a little help and inspiration. I have gone into semi retirement after 35 years driving tipper wagons still do a bit part time, and happily married (well for the moment.) depends how obsessed i become with this old girl
Just inherited a series 2a land rover, from an old friend who i mentioned to of the cuff along time ago that i was getting a bit board in semi retirement (the dogs only need so much walking) my friend passed away about 18 months ago. I received a phone call from his wife last month and asking if i wanted his old land rover, (i think she was torn over parting with it) why not i thought it will give me something to do, he had no kids so it would have ended up in the scrap yard. It's been sitting in an orchard since his death. so you can imagine its condition but we got it dragged home charged the battery checked the oil filled up the rad and it started no problem. no brakes no clutch but the engine seems ok.
the problem is history (no one to ask now) all i know for sure is its got the body of a series 2a , the chassis is galvanized, the engine mountings have not been modified ,the chassis been made to fit this engine, no battery box or air filter brackets (battery under seat) the engine is possibly a 2.5 na diesel (no turbo)?, gear box is possibly out of a series 3,
its the engine that is the most baffling it looks like a series diesel but has a timing belt thats why i believe its 2.5na we are having great difficulties deciphering exactly what age or model lr it came out of, as we will need parts.
spent a little money on master cylinders for both clutch and brake new slave cylinder few new copper pipes reservoir etc and all seems well in that direction.
the old girls a bit scruffy so many different colours of paint but she's got a charm about here,
the plan not for a full restoration because shes a bit of a frankensteins monster and i have not got 20 grand to spend but to tidy her up and make her presentable and of cause fun and safe to drive.
so we are here now hoping anyone out their has and thoughts or suggestions.
