We have just bought a Discovery 2 and when I went to drive off the other day water started pouring out of just about everywhere - seat belt slots, sunroof handles (the're manual ones), by the rear view mirror at the top of the windscreen and in the load area. We removed the headlining and sure enough the drain seals were leaking, although the drain pipes seemed to be clear. They were sealed up and after they had dried we did a test with the hose and no water came in - result, or so we thought.

Next morning, after it had rained overnight, there was water on the load area carpet. I got in the load area to have a closer look and as I did so some more water ran out of the back of the rear sunroof from the areas circled in the attached photos. The drive does have a slight slope and the car was parked bonnet upwards overnight (as it was when we did our hose pipe test). I turned the car round so it was bonnet downwards and it didn't leak all day despite fairly steady rain the whole time.

Clearly there is more for us to do to sort the leaks but I don't really know enough about what I am doing to know what our next move should be so any suggestions would be welcomed.

There loads of info already in the forum as it appears to be a common issue, so no point in repeating, but basically its due to either or both the seals being faulty, that will be sunroof frame to the roof which is more than likely or the glass seal if worn.

Thanks discool. I've read several posts on the Forum and guessed it would come down to one of the seals but none specifically mentioned water coming out of the same holes (which I have worked out is where the sun-blind unit clips in) and I was hoping someone would have some insight into which of the two seals was the most likely candidate for replacement.

Take the sunroof out and clean the seals in soapy water, then refit them but not backwards. Then Sikaflex the frame to the roof. Re check drains and all should be ok. Then seal gutters, screen, scuttle, roof bar feet and alpine windows.....

Both sunroofs have been done as described by ronsealdeath - removed, seals cleaned up and the frames sealed to the roof. The corner drains were all replaced by these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164690896131 and resealed, and the drain pipes all checked to make sure they were clear. So far so good, although the headlining has been left off for the moment so we can keep an eye on it just in case.

Thanks for your help.

We had some rain overnight the other day and in the morning a small amount of water had collected by the manual winding mechanism of the front sunroof as discovered as soon as I tried to drive off so today we got out the hose and sure enough there were signs of water seeping between the glass and the seal on both the front and the back sunroofs. Not much, but enough so I will order a couple of new seals and replace them both.

The only seal it shows on the parts list is the lower sunroof fame seal (between the roof & frame) p/no EEQ500010 £44.94 inc. vat but that is no longer available & why most people use Sikaflex 221 (inc. me).
It doesn't show a seal between the glass & the upper frame just an assembly. The upper frame assy. p/no EFP100253 was only £677.33 inc. vat (and that didn't inc. the glass) but is also N/L/A.
Hopefully someone knows what you can use.
Mine leaked between the roof & lower frame seal into the motor which over time seized it solid (before I got it).
Good luck.

Oh dear, I'm confused now. I was given p/n EEQ500010 as the rubber seal that the glass closed against but if I have read your post correctly you are saying EEQ500010 is the seal that goes between the metal roof and the sunroof frame, or have I misunderstood, in which case I apologise?

The part number u state is the correct glass seal that u need.

Thanks @discool . There don't appear to be any genuine Land Rover EEQ500010 seals available anywhere. I have seen posts about issues with aftermarket seals. Does anyone have any recent experience with the Britpart seals?

I've just had a look at the parts list again see item 21 in the pic. & as it's below the lower frame I took it as the roof to frame seal. Item 5 is the upper frame where you would expect to see the glass seal. I must admit I find the LR parts diagrams pretty crap.

If you use this link you can look up all the parts/prices etc for all 'Classic' LR's, where they put some of the bits you want to look at is a bit odd but you get there eventually;).

@Andy Warren I agree about the parts diagrams. I had never even spotted item 21 until you pointed it out because I wasn't looking there - it's in the wrong place. If only you could view a larger version of the diagram it would help, especially those of us with less than perfect vision. Hey ho, all sorted now - two Britpart seals on order from the LR man down the road, arriving Monday. Fingers crossed they will sort the sunroof leaks once and for all and we can concentrate on other things.

I now have two Britpart seals. Two questions.

Firstly, which way round should the seal go - with the flat edge facing inwards (image A) or with the groove facing inwards (image B)? The one that came off the car had the flat face facing in (A) and @Andy Warren 's second picture is the same. However, when you take the seal from the bag it naturally falls so that the flat side is facing outwards, so I just wanted to check.

Secondly, does the seal just push into the channel or should it be glued in some way?

Your Britpart seal looks a bit different from a genuine seal.
Photos below of a spare seal I’ve had hanging up on the garage wall for years, photos showi the upper face that meets the glass which has more rubber on the outer edge, and the underneath with a flat squarish ribbed edge which I expect slots into a retaining groove.

1st B is the part that meets the glass.
2nd The seal is a push fit. I believe that soap helps in locating the seal.

I think my Britpart seal is very similar to yours - they are just very difficult to photograph.

The key question now is, which way round does it go - 'A' or B? The old seal I took off was an 'A', but when you lay the new seal out it naturally lies as a 'B'. I could no doubt turn it 'inside out' and force it to be an 'A' but is that right?

Please excuse my rubbish drawings.

Hi, I've just taken some pics of mine. Pics 1 is the rear s/r seal & pic 2 is the front s/r seal ( taken facing the front). Pic 3 (the one with me pinky in it) is of the front s/r seal taken with camera facing the rear .

I would say drawing A after taking my pics.

That looks familiar, :D
I only open the sunroofs once a year to remove the rubbish that collects around that part of the seal then quickly close the glass again, never had to bother looking how the seal is fitted, I have a spare seal just in case, from the days when u could just walk into a dealers parts department and ask for a seal.

Yep, sunroofs in my opinion are a waste of time, air con all the way for me.
