Hi everyone, yes I know, another gearbox/ tq thread, I know there is loads of info on here about these things, and I know they are common faults, but everyone else had explained joulty gears and slipping, juddering and humming! Iv had mine now for about 6 months, and have had alot of issues with it, but things are getting sorted now! However, I do have this slight judder and humming noise from the car still, I have done an oil and filter change, with the correct oil, it is now 95% better than it was, used to judder at between 30-55, Low revs in top gear, and hummed alot! After the oil change, It has vastly improved, rev counter seems to stay constant, doesn't bounce around atall! It's done it twice that iv noticed in two weeks, after the oil and filter change! The gear changes have always been smooth, even with the old oil, never joulty or harsh, and the rev counter did bounce around alot, between 100 and 200 revs before the oil and filter was changed. Can anyone advise me, does this need a recon box or rebuild, or a torque converter, my money is on torque converter, but I'm not too experienced with the newer stuff, but think the car is playing tricks, and when I think it's doing it, it may actuly be the road surface! Thanks for reading, Tom.

I had no warning at all. No juddering that I could detect, no slipping just started coming up with the Failsafe thing and not locking the TQ. I'm afraid you're always on borrowed time unless you have the valve block replaced to fix the problem. Mine had a recon box fitted just before I bought it and lasted about 18 months and 12000 miles. In for another box now and then straight onto the bay of e. Lifelong Land Rover fan but no more I'm afraid. I'll admire from the sidelines.

Okay, well I am a mechanic so can take out and refit my self, and have access to a ramp and so on, so I am lucky in that respect, but just wondered if a tc would sort it for a few more thousand miles, TBH, it's not proving a real problem at the moment, but is my only car, so would like to have some sort of info before I go delving in, thanks anyways, these are great cars, they just need to be looked after properly! Doesn't help land rover them self's say the boxes are sealed for life! Thanks, Tom.

If the shifts are smooth and it runs silky aside from the drone.....just change the TQ and see where you're at.

If that cures it....happy days, and only cost you the TQ.

If you still get issues, you can fit a new/recon box and fit your new TQ to it.

it sounds like a new valve body to me but as said change the TQ first. if you still have the problem then new valve body. but if there are bits of brass in the bottom of the pan when you take it off. then i would put a new recon kit in and new valve body and TQ then you have a new start like im having done on the 11th

Okay, well I will fit the new torque converter then and see what goes, and no, there was just normal tiny filings and grit type stuff in the bottom of the pan, but soo soo tiny, no big chunks of brass or metal, and the oil wasn't shiny as if there was metal deposits in it, so seemed okay! Okay, so you can buy new valve blocks, are they modified to rectify the issue? Thanks for all your input! Tom.

If you search for recent posts by Bemble as he has recently started up a business specialising in all things ZF5HP24 including torque cinverters , valve body refurbishing and transmission overhauls and he knows everything there is to know and a lot more. You may have bumped into his posts as RRPhil on other sites

Morning Ant, I think Phil has a test rig set up for the ZF valve body as he checked mine and it was fine as you say.
Have you done yours yet ?

7am on a Bank Holiday Andy???

Still not done mine yet, looking around at good prices for a TQ at the moment....might have to contact the Legend that is Phil and get a quote from him.

I am still reeling from the fact I will have to strip the interior out for the next repair.....not looking forward to that one!

I know, bit of a lay in...
Phil has the TC on the shelf which I would guess would be JPAT refurbs which are perfect i am sure and I'm sure TLTIP would do you a good deal.
Mine was refurbed by sussex autos and is still going strong but JPAT are still the most experienced i would guess.
When are you going to reveal the need for your interior strip down, are you having a leopard print / tiger stripe upgrade ?

Lol, well I will sort a torque converter out, but I want a modified one or a remanufactured one as the oe ones are obviously not up to the Job, so will sling one in and see what happens! Thanks for info tho, very fast learning on these as its my only motor now, no good old 300tdi to pick up the pieces anymore! Lol! Thanks guys! Tom.

Now, I have tried to send a message to bemble, because I'm interested in a torque converter from him, does anyone e know how I can contact him??? I want one soon as I want to sort this car before it does any more damage! Thanks, Tom.

I'll try and raise him this end but I think he is still in the very early stages of his business and gets very busy but i'm sure he will be back to you shortly.
if i hear anything i'll let you know.
I understand the TC in the ZF box is unlikely to let go and ruin your transmission as happens with the GM one in the diesel but good idea to get it sorted as soon as
Andy
