Now I'm aware that fitting a roof rack well and truly craps on your mpg, but if I have a external cage and if I incorporate a roof rack into it so that the floor of the rack is the cage, will that effect my fuel consumption as much as just a cage on its own?

any form of structure will cause an effect on mpg due to the turbulence they generate

i wouldnt worry about it too much, your driving the aerodynamic equivalent of a parachute ffs.

I keep my roof bars and half tray thing on all the time - like others have said, you're effectively driving a breeze block wall anyhow!

My reasoning is purely down to convenience and pure laziness - I'd have to store the stuff somewhere and I can guarantee I'd need it back on within days of taking it off.

The roof bars and box are permanently attached to the wife's passat estate for the same reasons - convenience and laziness.

It has a small effect on MPG but not as much as you'd think at normal day to day speeds as in the daily commute.

The tray starts whistling on the disco at about 70 odd, the box on the passat at about 100 ish. If they don't, sommat's wrong like they've fallen off or they need tightening up!

I noticed mines did, I've got a significant increase in mpg since I took my roof rack off. Or perhaps its the injector cleaner I put through. Or my new tyres. Or the fact that I've cleared junk out of the back. Who knows, either way its saving me cash so it'll only go back on when I need it
