Hi all,

I've had a look around the forums for a while to sort this out before posting. However have not managed to come to a proper conclusion.

I recently replaced the compressor in my P38 with a refurb as my old one died completely.

After installing the compressor I wanted to test that there was no leak (causing the death of old compressor I figured) so I put it in high mode and it stayed there for 2 days straight.... No leak?

However when running the thing it seems like the compressor is coming on all the time, only to go off for maybe 20 seconds max. I sprayed some foamy liquid around the area near compressor but again found no leak.

When running it makes your reg motor compressor sound, then goes put put put put then there's a quick release of air? Normal?

There are more things to test I understand but I'm far from an expert in the area so was wondering if people had suggestions?

Cheers

If you are checking with the bonnet open, then that is also what mine does. Close the bonnet and operation returns to normal with infrequent runs. Not all do this apparantly.

When it comes to leaks from the airbags, they leak where they fold under at the bottom, the leaks open and close as the fold moves so putting them on high to test may show nothing. If the airbags are original, look to see if they look perished, they almost certainly are and so will be leaking.

There are plenty of other places for leaks including the valve block. Remember it only takes a very small leak on one corner to drop the car as it will try to self level causing the whole car to go down.

Sorry but the usual sentence that i read everywhere : put it on high mode and it stayed there so no leaks, is wrong!! First thing is airsprings usually never leak in that high mode and at park. Second thing is that you only tested half of the system the 4 airspring ports, pipes and airsprings. A frequent cycling compressor can be caused by a leaking valve block on port #6 or by a bad diaphragm or by a melted pipe over rear crossmember.

Yip, Florent is correct.

Never test for leaks in Offroad mode. When you have leaky airbags, it shows quickest when you park on regular height. Unloock the tailgate (or disconnect the black relais under the drivers seat) and leave the car for a night.

With a disconnected relais (or unlocked tailgate), the car will not level. Making the car drop on the side where the leak is.

Please maken sure that you replace airsprings by axle. So front left leaky? Replace front right as well....

Goswin
