another design flaw maybe?

driver had a lucky escape after his vehicle exploded at a petrol station, taking out much of the building in a dramatic blaze.
Dubai Police said the Emirati man stepped out of the white Range Rover and went into the shop moments before a fire started in the fuel tank at 12.20pm on Saturday.
CCTV images released by police showed flames spurting from the open petrol valve, which still had the pump attached.
The accident took place at the ENOC station on in the Al Twar area of Al Qusais, close to the border with Sharjah.
A Dubai Police spokesman said: “A fire started in the fuel tank of a 4×4 inside the ENOC petrol station on Al Quds Road and the blaze spread through the station. Dubai Civil Defence arrived and controlled the fire. Nobody was hurt.”
An ENOC spokesman said: “ENOC can confirm that a fire broke out at a petrol station in Al Twar earlier. It was contained by Dubai Civil Defence. No injuries were reported. We are working with the authorities to investigate the accident.”

Agree that this appears the most likely cause. Scary though. Glad no one was hurt.

So...... did the petrol pumps earth system fail...? or was it the cars ...?

Another advantage of Diesel, if you ask me !!

Problem would be the pump I guess, car is insulated from the ground by the tyres.

Incredible shame!! Glad nobody was hurt but a terrible shame a beautiful machine was lost!! The fuel stations should have extinguishers that are able to spray a retardant from the side with nozzles directed sideways towards the vehicle being fueled!!! Maybe someone will invent a system for protecting life and property it's not a complicated system to design and implement '!!

Indeed. Something based on datacenter suppressants would work well in that situation.

A three second blast of 75psi CO2 from a one inch pipe running parallel with the pumps would certainly suffocate the flames and not damage the vehicle! If at the same level of the filling nozzle on average the only danger would be frost bite to the hands!! People would need to adjust there habits and wear gloves while fueling which should be done anyway because of the fuel skin contact risk!! I don't think suffocation is an issue with people because of the fact that they are going to run naturally as soon as they see the flames!! CO2 would keep the air cold as well if someone did end up near the flames reducing burns dramatically!!!

if this was a common occurrence then I would agree,however if it isn't then tough titty,plenty of rangies about(and the rag heads have plenty of petrol
