Freelander 1 Another air con thread

Ever sense I have had the car (2006 td4 ) the air con has not worked I have had it re-gassed (no leaks) I have pinched my sons air con relay and swooped it with mine both relays work fine . I can not see the compressor much less check it , is there away I can check the compressor with out taking the engine guard off and the switch on the right hand side of the engine bay air con pressure switch I think can I check that ? thank you

the fuses are ok I will pinch my sons switch tomorrow and see if its that, there is power there and it lights up so am not sure it is the switch , it could well be an electrical prob I am hoping I can find out if there are any well known probs with fl1 aircon systems so I will have some were to start . Can I ask is the fuse for the aircon in the fuse box underneath the steering wheel or are there any in the engine bay as well?

It's probably the clutch on the end of the Aircon compressor has rusted shut through lack of use. A well known problem

What is the fix in this case? New/replacement compressor?, or can the clutch be replaced/cleaned up on its own?

can the pressure switch be checked and I take it if the switch is unscrewed the gas will escape ?

A quick update on this I unplugged the wiring to the aircon pressure valve and the fans came on is this normal ? any ideas

Don't unscrew the tri-state switch from the system or the gas will escape, which is illegal.

Possibly the fans do come on. I've never tried it on a FL1.

Thanks Nodge I thought as much I was trying to find away to test the switch , I was going to bridge the switch then found out it has three wires .If I remember when I turned the aircon off ie pressed the button the fans stopped

You can't test the switch really. It's 2 switches in one unit. There's a low pressure switch and a high pressure switch. Both will disconnect the AC compressor clutch when activated. Your best test to do is see if there is 12 volts at the compressor electrical connection. There's only a single wire that goes live when the compressor is needed. The 12 volts is then used to feed an electro magnetic clutch in the compressor pulley. You can actually see the clutch plate clicking in and out, if it's working. Sometimes the clutch centre rusts up so it can't move.

And from what I can see the only way to check that is to take the engine cover off and get underneath, not something I have the time to do yet unfortunately

The compressor is on the bottom, which is annoying.
You'll need to wait until you can allow an extra 10 minutes to remove the sump guard.

Don't forget to allow 2 minutes for the splash shield removal Nodge. That's very important too

Best bet if you don't want to get in there that is. Get a stethoscope (in the old days a long shaft and place your ear against one end the noise will resonate through the shaft). place it on the body of the compressor (not the clutch or belt) then have somebody else turn the compressor on and off (engine must be running) this will produce a lovely clicking sound. Which is the compressor clutch engaging and being disengaged. Also if it is working pipese will be moist/condensated after about 5mins. If it does not work please make sure pressure is correct and sensor is operating as normal. In many cases I have had to replace the pressure sensor. Test wires that plug into the compressor that operate the clutch if ok. Replace the clutch on the compressor. Not a 5 min job mind.
