I have a 1996 p reg ES 300tdi auto disco1 that has a bit o trouble gerrin outa bed in a morning

I always w8 for glow plugs and have just replace all 4 for new one's that I know r getting power. However when I turn her over she takes a while longer than our other disco then when she does fire she runs dead lumpy and then either dies or runs fine depending on wether i blip the throttle. I also get a large puff of smoke from the exhaust but this clears as soon as she's running smooth so i assume thats probably unburnt fuel.

n e one got n e ideas what I should threaten with me pliers and lump hammer next please

ta muchly

My own experience with the 300tdi is it will start with NO Glows working.
I would investigate further like a fuelling problem maybe:eek:
Im sure someone will have the answer on here somewhere:D

i had a prob where longer it was left the longer it took to start and it usually would go vroom then die instantly with first turn of key, then take some cranking. Turned out to be split leak off pipe on one of injectors presumably letting diesel run back down the line and letting air in when it was stood. Fixed that and it was normal again.

Quick lesson on injection pumps here, LUCAS pump - don't touch the throttle when starting, BOSCH pumps, although they don't often need it, a full foot of throttle on starting will increase the cold start fuelling - a lot of older generation diesels called for right throttle on cold starting.

Give it, glow plugs, and then deck throttle and turn the key - see what that does. If it works adopt full right foot starting technique.

If that doesn't work try letting the glow light extinguish then, turn off the whole ignition and quickly turning it back on again and letting the plugs run a second time, then try starting it. If this works the plugs are bad and are taking too long to get up to a useful temperature. I believe the time taken for Bosch plugs to come up to full operating temperature is about 8 seconds. So the vehicle will be expecting the plugs will be up to temp but in face they might not be hot enough yet, running them twice quickly in succession will help get them up to temp. So if this works, dual glow it, or buy Bosch or BERU plugs.

When was fuel filter last changed, and has sedimenter been cleaned?Sounds like an air leak some where if glow plugs working good

fuel filter change at last service just ova a month and sedimentor is on to do list so may do that once it stops raining ta will also try foot to floor method but has only recently started doing it. the first time it did it was when I had left it at work all week monday morning till friday night and it had been hot wether all week but got back to yard and she did it then for first time and been like it eva since. if that helps n e

How do I know which pump is on it. the shed is a 300tdi auto es with that edc trickery does that make a differance

The return lines(leak off pipes) on the injectors aren't weeping fuel at all are they-I am sure air is getting in somewhere
