Annoying Horse Riders in the Peaks

Sorry to hear that you are getting abuse ...if those watching the two riders can't appreciate that you gave them your best shot at being polite and considerate , then they need to learn that we are all sharing these off road spaces and that you've dutifully paid your road tax , which entitles you to be there just as much as them ...Grrrr

well even myself being a non horsey person can see that you did everything you could to be polite and not to upset the nags,plus the horses.

Here's a bit of a summary of what I've learnt/been told by the horsey people!

I should have stopped and turned my engine off.
Equally I've been told I should just have maintained a constant speed.
A crisp packet blowing past can startle a horse?!! :crazy:
A Horse does not require any kind of insurance to be on the road and can weigh between 1/2 a tonne and a tonne.
Anyone of any age can ride a horse on a public road providing if they are under 14 years old they have a helmet.
I am the devil for posting a video suggesting this rider didn't have her horse under control and that they were miserable to us

I know I put a tongue in cheek micky take edge to it but really!

tell em to bugger off then.miserable sods.they do not own these lanes etc,they are for all to enjoy.

To be honest, you did the right thing. Most motorist don't slow or care when ponies and horses around. The amount of vehicles probably spooked the riders and if one if them was inexperienced the it was probably very stressful for them, not your fault. Ponies and horse can spook easily unless trained not to, and even then they still can. I have both Defender and daughter that rides, so see it from both points of view. Around ponies and horses you have to think that anything could happen. Yes its crazy that you can ride without much experience but any BHS registered stables should follow safety procedures and at least one riding should have taken road safety exam. If you are a member of the Pony Club and, I think the BHS, then you are covered by their third party insurance. If one of them gave you a look, which I did not see, it was probably more stressful than grumpy. I'm sure, well would hope, that they were grateful for you understanding.

PS The experienced riding should have put the other one on a lead rope in a situation like this.

I was working on another spoof Land Rover film yesterday (Angry Walker Confronting Land Rover 4x4 Refusing Access to a Green Lane - YouTube) and while we were out messing around a couple of lads did some add libbing with a prop we had lying around. It made me giggle anyway!

To be honest, I think the horse riders were only asking a question. Hardly worth making a video about and I definitely wouldn't send it viral.
to be fair I lane most weeks and meet horse and riders and they are fine, I usually turn the engine off and wait till their past.
Though you get just as much up the arse 4x4 drivers who just drive straight towards the horses, me personally I would not want a ton horse smashing through my windscreen
I don't know how the insurance company would sort that out

Generally speaking and in my home town I completely agree. The Peaks is quite special when it comes to attitudes to 4x4's

Interestingly since I first posted this a number of horse riding folk have commented quite positively on YouTube. Maybe take some time to have a look. It interested me anyway. It was only a tongue in cheek dig after all which most people seem to be getting.

best place for a horse is in a dog's bowl...

Most horses do not weight a ton, 1000-1300 is the normal

It depends - some people take a ton these days to mean 1000 kg, whereas it used to be known as a tonne. Now, the old, imperial TON is 2240 pounds...

mine used to do exactly the same he could spot a bloody brolly a mile away!! lol as for the coloured horse taking the **** if that had been mine he would've had a strong leg on him n even the threat of a smack on the bum with my crop!! don't do naughty horses lol

I'm sure you have to have 3rd party liability but it's obviously not policed, i used to just in case!!

You dont have to have 3rd party liability on a horse, but its stupid not to.

I had terrible trouble when my old lad hit 30, my company wouldn't insure him third party any more. God knows why he was a greater third party risk at 30 than he was at 29 and they hadn't covered him for anything else once he got to 20. And he was on a multiple horse policy so they couldn't say it wasn't worth it for the cost.

I ended up having to join the BHS gold membership which comes with 3rd party insurance if you dont have any other cover

Please dont shoot me for not reading all the post - Far too many.
OP, I would just like to say thank you for being so patient with the riders. I live in an area where most of the riding is on lanes unless you can actually get on the soggy moors. I have never had a problem with any local / 4x4 driver - just the bloody townies who have no idea how to drive on country lanes!
I love the way they snake in reverse when the passing point is 50 yards behind them - most townies are scared of the 17hh shire x and the 16'2hh Irish x tb that stand quietly in front of them!

(just to add, we do get out of the way asap, smile and wave at drivers)
