Annihilated My Clutch

From what I've read, the DMF was instead of the springs you used to get in clutches, and is there to add refinement in the pickup and to keep the diesel vibes from the gearbox. Some say that by going back top SMF as long as you have a nicely sprung clutch should and have been ok, but some say and have found they blow the box to pieces from what I have read in the VW world. My findings are that if the DMF lasts as long as the clutch, then that's not so bad. I can live with that. Yes, it's a big bill but only once every 100k or so.

Yeah mine lasted 82k, but it was the dmf that was going first. I'm getting a carbon/kevlar mix HD clutch so it should be stronger and make the difference less noticable

Sounds fun... ;)

Btw, how do your tyres feel on road? Does it feel wallowy? I have Bridgestone Duellers in 195/80/15 and it's like driving a 3 legged marshmallow pig at the mo in the bends....

Since when doesn't a Freelander feel wallowy? Lol actually mine aren't that bad, had spacers fitted briefly with my 215/65 Scorpions and it improved the roadholding a lot, only noticed a small worsening with the 225/75's fitted. Maybe it's the narrow tyres doing it?

I reckon mine have soft sidewalls too which don't help. My last Coopers- ST MAXX were quite stiff sidewalls and felt great to me.

I know, need someone to fit it for me, as I suspect the bolts holding the suspension on at the bottom will be a pain to remove

Manual Freelanders & climbing Rudland Rigg don't mix ;) I replaced 3 clutches in my manual Freeby, most of the damage was caused by going up Rudland Rigg, I almost became addicted to the smell of cooking clutch !!. The thing is with no low box you have to be very "comitted" :D but on Rudland Rigg thats not possible due to the large steps so slipping the clutch isn't something that can be avoided.
Incidentally it was never the clutch plate that was burnt out it was always the "slave cylinder" which is a doughnut that fits around the shaft, the rubber diaphragm gets damaged by the heat & throws in the towel in no time. I always got the clutch plate replaced anyway because it only made a small difference to the total bill which is mostly labour costs.
You need to get an Auto mate you can crawl up as slow as you like & even stop & start without the big bill at the end of it !!

Yeah I discovered that lol, my pedal just disappeared so straight away knew something wasn't right. As you say, it was probably the slave cylinder giving up!

Could fancy an auto, especially if its a v6, but after spending best part of £1k on fixing mine, its unlikely i'll be changing soon.
