I've read just about all threads on the dreaded 'squeal' with Td5.
Started by changing the auxiliary belt which was worn in places but still squeaking.
Next was the tensioner which was easy to change. Even stuck a 5c coin in there which was a popular fix to a squeaky belt... Still squeaking.
ACE pump seemed to have some 'in-and-out pulley play' so changed that as well... Still squeaking and now I have a second hand ACE pump in perfect working order (the new one also had 'in-and-out play' so obviously it's a design tolerance).
Next the exhaust manifold. Bingo (?) 2 snapped studs and a warped manifold. So replaced the studs (with uprated Wurths) and had the manifold skimmed, new gaskets head-side and turbo-side reassembled and guess what... Still squeaking.
WTF... the squeak is much less and I've retorqued the lugs a week later but I'm now stumped. It has to be exhaust gases as the squeal pitches up and down with revs (my Disco's an auto box so easy to distinguish), and only under load so there's no squeal on idle or stand-still revving.
Could be the turbo/manifold gasket even though I replaced it. The faces weren't skimmed so my only idea is some Holts Fire Gum before I dismantle the Turbo. If the gum eliminates the squeal then I can get those two faces skimmed as well.
Its bloody annoying! I'm a bit OCD when it comes to things like this so any other suggestions would be v welcome. In the meantime I have a leaky sunroof to fix. I love my Landy (chanting repeatedly)
