Hi everyone, having sold my P38 (2001) in November, after doing much work, and now watching it run , I am considering buying another...There seems to be more 4.6's available.. are these engines weaker/less reliable than the 4 litre.
Kind regards .

Both have similar issues....

The 4.6 is just a stroked 4.0 - (they have the same bore size)

Some say the extra bang in the 4.6 cylinder weakens components quicker, but that is speculative. some say the 4.6 burns hotter - but again, the difference is minor compared to the combustion temps already in the chamber!

4.0 GEMS is the base
4.6 GEMS and 4.0 THOR are comparable
4.6 THOR is the engine of choice.

The 4.6 is a fraction more efficient than the 4.0 as you are not on the loud pedal as much.

As long as they have been maintained and the cooling system is up to snuff, they are not bad engines, they are just misunderstood.

Thanks... also. P38 4.6 Thor... hesitation between 35-40. error code P1319 where would be first place to check.
Regards

Hi. maybe the one... on my last P38 (and only) had the same symptoms.. turned out to be the head gasket on right han side. I replaced plug leads, plugs, coils, maf to no avail..
It was a lot of work to do the head gaskets... what do you think ?
Kind regards

Get yourself a Classic, avoid something that resembles a London cab, all the electrical gizmos & potential liner problems. Go for a 3.5 (if you can find a decent one) & if you feel it's underpowered have it stroked, I wish I'd done that years ago.
Now I'm off to find my flak-vest before P38 owners read this
