Hi all

With a baby girl on the way and a big stupid dog, I've realised I need another vehicle. ATM I have a BMW 3 series which whilst being passable with just me, the mrs and the dog, isn't really gonna cut it once I've got the wee one too and need to take the dog with us.

So, I only have a budget of about £1500 max and I think a Discovery would be ideal for my needs ( ferrying everyone and the rotty about ). Am I mad to be considering looking at Discoverys at this sort of price? Also, what about defenders? Although, I can see i wouldn't get much for that sort of money!

I have a basic knowledge of mechanics and there are a few mechys at work who i could tap for some help once in a while :D oh and plenty of tools!

So what do you guys think? Mental, or reasonable to consider at this price? Cheers

I bought mine at £3000, 72K FSH, ES Spec and 1998, in perfect condition so for that sort of money I think you could get a decent 200tdi originally found one at £2000 at a garage I was and I was gonna buy but the extra cash for the newer one came about so I went for that

At £1500 an old 93 reg 200tdi in good condition should be a great buy, the one I saw went for £1900 so knock a bit off for private sale and the fact that I live in the lake district which makes everythings price rocket for some stupid reason

Can't help with the disco's pal, but unless you are unbelievably lucky the only Fender you will get for that brass is going to be a massive money pit. Save up some more brass and get a Fender, you wont regret it, i get 5 of us in the front (110), plus a terrier and a huge mastiff in the back and drive everywhere with a big grin on my face:D:D:D:D:D:D:D;)

£1500 should get you a disco but....................be prepared for some work either mechanical or structural or both!!
but if you can afford to buy it while you have the bemeer at least you could get out and about to get bits, there are good disco's around you just need to find them dont rush and be picky and you will be ok

forget defenders go for a five door disco, its a far better family car, rust in the cils , rear wheel arches and boot floor is the potentially expensive bits... the mechanicals are basically simple and theres lots of scrapers about to rob bits off.

Tbh this was kind of what I was thinking, that it's more than likely going to lead to big bills and trouble. Think I'll probably end up going for a boring old estate for a year or two then maybe look again.

Speaking of defenders, I don't know much about them but what I've seen of them I think I'll HAVE to have one at some point! Lol think it'd go nicely alongside something more sensible

There is no reason why you couldn't get a jap import disco for that money. You won't regret buying one of them. No rust and a decent spec.

I got one off fleabay this time last year for £2k and a year later I have not had to spend a penny on it other than one light bulb. I would normally have serviced it in that time but things have been daft the last year so time to get that done!.
