Am I being mugged off?

Hi All, appreciate your views on the following..

We have a Defender 110, 2002, which is currently in with a garage after having some noises under breaking. They have said the following is needed, which may be the case, but the prices seem very high compared to parts online! Please can you give me your thoughts. Apparently the car cannot be driven away now as the calipers were seized and damaged trying to free up.

- Rear Discs & Pads: £273
- Front Pads: £120
- Rear Calipers pair: £438
- Front Left Caliper: £374

is there any way this is justifiable to you guys?

Yeah, if it is supply & fit work with post work guarantees. Remember people have to make a living.
Or, you buy the parts and do it yourself?

Rear Discs & Pads: £273, might seem dear but Iirc hub/halfshaft etc has to come off, assume parts and labour?
- Front Pads: £120, that seems mental to me, I would say 50/60 quid was taking the psis
- Rear Calipers pair: £438, double mental
- Front Left Caliper: £374, holy shti!

I think you need to get the old gril trailered home, even if you cant diy a mobile mech will be way way cheaper.

Iirc rear calipers for my 90 were 60 quid the pair, I realise 110 is bigger brakes, but even if we double the price of the parts.

I would like to do it myself, but I am working out of the country for the next month (marine engineer), and my partner has it in the garage back home, so wanted to check with some people more in the know!

Yes, labour included

still pricey as changing rear calipers is part of changing the discs /pads

Check out eurocarparts with your reg number, they are defo not the cheapest but lots of the trade use them.

I have had one quote back from a mobile mechanic company, and for the same work he has quoted £840, so still a fair bit, but quite a difference. The front caliper and pads from the original garage seem extortionate.

Over Christmas I replaced all calipers, rotors, pads, and parking brake shoes on my FL2 for under £400, that's 4 calipers, 4 rotors, pads, shoes and all fitting hardware required, under 5 hours to fit everything.

Ok the FL2 isn't a Defender 110, but the prices of the components would be less, and I can't see the work taking more time either.

They are all taking the ****. Get it transported to someone who doesn't see you as a cash cow.

Just remember if there is any doubt, then there is no doubt, ie the original garage are trying it on.
On the plus side 33 percent of the original quote is a pretty penny saved.

My local garage replaced all discs and pads on my 90 last year at £607.00 (included one rear bearing and MOT ) and obviously all brake fluid replaced

I don't like the sound it this. If it were me would get it back in my possession. They've got you over a barrel and I don't trust the story about "can't be driven" how did it get there? Trouble is they are within rights to prevent it being driven if they deem it unsafe. If you can arrange to get it then do so. Get the mobile mech to do it, there's no rush. I would be phoning the garage and telling them a mate will come over and drive it away and see that they say. Was it your partner who took it in?
Many years ago my mother's VW broke down on her way to work. She got it recovered to the local VW main agent. They called at lunchtime - it needed a new clutch and gear box, full engine out. Her boss raced Formula V, He went over. It was on the lift with the engine out. The problem? The £2 clutch cable bracket had snapped. The other problem, my mother was "female". Final bill was under 1/10th of the quote.

No, they are not.
That is frequently see on various forums where people are told that they can't drive their car away from various garage chains until this, that or the other work has been carried out.
Until such time as there is a change in law that means they can issue prohibition notices - and absent a repairer's lien - they cannot lawfully prevent you removing your vehicle.

ETA An MoT tester can opine that a fault makes a vehicle dangerous & should not be driven but again, absent a repairer's lien, they cannot prevent the vehicle being driven away or removed from their premises.
