ok we have a 1995 300 tdi. Driving home this morning,came off a round about and the battery light came on and stayed on. I pulled over popped the bonnet, had a smell of burning and spark off the back of the alty. The splash gaurd has come off and touch the terminals. The batt light is still on took a reading from the back of the alty and was getting 13.1 volts, took another from the batt and was getting the same reading. When i put the system under load ie turn everything on the voltage dropped like a stone to 12.9 volts. I did have a blown fuse inside the car a 10amp,which i have replaced. Also the car has been fitted with a push button start system, so will start the engine whether the keys are in or not. Any help would be great.

yu have shorted the alt output and blown the regulator. take it to Halfrauds for a free alt test ~(or anywhere else wot duz it) - get as much info from the alt that yu can labels, numbers etc, and get yoself a noo regulator and rectifier pack from ebay. shud be good as gold after.

or go buy a noo alternator.
