Hi All

P38 DHSE 2001 here with a failing alternator. I fitted a 1000cca battery last year and the lack of output from the stock alternator has eventually killed it. A new battery has revealed the alternator problem - it charges but not enough to properly condition a 130ah 1000cca battery.
My question is this:

Does anyone know if a TD6 L322 alternator will fit my P38? .
The TD6 alternator is listed as 150a output which seems much better.
Some sites list the TD6 unit as correct for the Vauxhall Omega 2.5td so it may fit other M51 engines I am hoping.
Anyone got any ideas or experience please?

The L322 alternator will not fit and I think it's water cooled. The standard alternator is fine, what you need is the correct voltage output, 120 amps is plenty but you need 14.2 volts minimum at 2k rpm for a modern battery (14.5 volts is better). I run a 135AH 1000CCA battery on my 2000 DHSE with no problems, although a lot of short runs will kill the battery whatever size alternator you fit, in that situation a charger is the best option.

Thanks

Alternator is putting out 13.86v at idle with no load. No increase in output with increased revs. I've checked all the earths etc and still no improvement.

It seems this car should have a 120amp alternator fitted but theres no record of this part on any of the usual suppliers on the net. Plenty of 105a ones listed though.

Checked the BECM and it is sleeping ok.
Any ideas what the correct part number is for the 120a alternator? Cant find this in any previous posts.

Try Island 4 x 4 , Famous 4, Paddocks etc. The important thing is that the regulator set point is 14.2 volts or more, up to 14.5v is fine. 13.86 is NBG.

Alternator current ratings varied by year, I believe early was 105 amp and later was 120 amp, not sure though. It may be possible to find a 150 amp that will fit.

You've diagnosed your own problem, it's nothing to do with the battery or the size of the battery. You have a duff alternator.
Agree with the above...13.86 is poop!

All -Thanks. Alternator was indeed U/S. Got a replacement off the shelf from Sahibs at Hanger Lane. Now kicking out 14.2v at idle.
All looking good - vehicle starts and drives much better.

For the record DHSEs and DSEs and DTs were all fitted with 105a output alternators part STC2227. LR have no knowledge of UK Diesel P38s fitted with a larger alternator.

TDV6 alternator from the BMW M57 engine will not fit this engine. Be careful as the M57 engine was fitted to late model Vauxhall/Opel Omegas.
