just bought new alternator, for 1988 defender. taken the old one off , its the same except for the bit where the belt sits. (new one has like a sort of groove where it should go, the old one however has this groove but its got like a sort of fan on it as well).
should i take the old one off and put it on the new one ?

Talking of alternators, where's the best place to get one fairly quick. Just driven down here to glorious Brum land and the old girl thought she was going home and got a bit excited and won't charge properly. With no electrics on (fan, lights etc) it charges the battery. Side lights on are ok if you keep the revs up, but put dip on and everything dims slightly and dims even more when you put brakes on. Screeming flat out things brighten up a bit and momentarily light up really bright like they should then gradually fade, as soon as revs drop it fades again until it drains battery.

Is this a ferked alternator? Voltage reg? Slack/worn belt (it's dark so will look in the morning)? Loose connection?

It's interesting driving down the M42 sandwiched between 2 wagons with only your sidelights on :D

look up an ebay seller called Vehicle Electrics

they'll either sell you a new un and fit it fer peanuts, or fix yer old un for some walnuts

what? split charge system? i think so. i got one of them. the kind thats fitted in a metal box. not the wires and relay. its got 3 connections 2 to batteries and one to alternator. must be easy!
