hello just fitted a new alternator to my 300 tdi defender when on tick over the battery reads 13.8 volts but when I accelerate this can creep up to over 16 volts witch I know is too high . any ideas

yes send it back and get it replaced

New alternator is not working correctly, Do not use it as it will not be doing your battery any favours.
