Alternator

There is an annoying whirring sound coming from top of engine near alternator. When I put metal rod on alternator casing and listen it sounds very corse as though bearings are worn. Is it possible to change bearings or do I need to be looking for a replacement. Alternator charges just fine.

Bearings can be changed. Some are more difficult to do than others. Valeo can be a pain in the arse.

I use Ribblesdale auto electrical in Preston. Some stuff on eBay. Or just take the bearings out read the numbers and go here. Simply Bearings Ltd ~ Oil Seals SKF FAG TIMKEN KOYO NTN NKE TRULOC Needle Rollers Taper Rollers Rod Ends Oil Filled Bushes Loose Balls O Rings Grease Plain Thrust If it's split case Valeo you really need to know what you are doing or you may as well just get a new one now. Look at where the cases joint if you can see four bolts it needs special methods.

Could also be shorted turns on the field coils.

Yes they can make a terrible noise. Mine sounded like stones were caught in the alternator.
