There's an intermittent high pitched whining coming from the alternator, i did the big screw driver / stethoscope test and it sounds like the bearings. Can this be fixed or do i just put up with it till it dies and replace it?

The alternator typically whines on the V8. I don't know if you have a V8 or TD5.

The bearings can be replaced - not a simple job - though relatively unconplicated if you are OK with spanners and screwdrivers, Be sure to keep dirty fingers off the slip rings though.

You may simply leave it to whine. The bearings may be OK for quite a while yet.

Good Luck

It's an old TDI so no V8 i''m afraid and the whine is REALLY loud now, I'm not afraid of me spanners but don't have a bloody clue if the alternator can be fixed.
