Alternator rebuild

D1 96 tdi I went to dismantle my alternator today to replace the bearings and slip ring, But, I cant de-solder the winding ends. I have a 100watt soldering gun but it wont melt the solder, what the hell have they used anyone done theirs, I am thinking of one of those gas pencils any ideas anyone.

I replaced one of the bearings in mine and had to use a mini blow torch, one of those chefs ones, cost about £15. With that and the new bearing for a fiver i reckon i saved about £90 over a new alternator!

Hi, Just dismantled mine for front bearing failure, I used a pencil type blowtorch. If you put a little flux on the solder it will help the solder flow as you melt it. My stator had shorted to earth so knackered, however here in Brunei they will rewind it! Just as well as a new alternator here is over 350 quid!!! To test the stator check between all three wires to the case there should be no continuity, then test between each pair, there should be very low resistance a couple of ohms or less. To test the rotor check between the slip rings and the center shaft and there should be no continuity, then test between the slip rings and there should be low resistance about 2 -3 ohms. Recommend change the brushes whilst at it.

It's not low temp multi core but high temp stuff similar to silver solder when manufactured using a machine a bit like a spot welder but a lot lot smaller.
