Hi there to all you fellow Land Rover fans. Question::

Lucas 16ACR alternator, can anybody tell me what the normal amps & volts output on this unit is ( had heard it`s 34a & 14.5v max ) but not sure.

Think mines on the blink as it`s pushing out 5a & 12.8v when connected to the battery & running at approx 1800rpm, don`t know much about the
workings of the battery charging circuit but would appreciate a bit of
feedback from members in the forum before I start to investigate further & get me wallet out.

Make/type Lucas 16 ACR
Polarity Negative earth
Nominal output 34 amps at 6,000 rpm (2,800 rpm - engine)
Nominal system voltage: 14.2 volts at 20% nominal output
Brush length (above holder)
New 0.5 in (13 mm)
Wear limit 0.25 in (6 mm)
Voltage regulator: Lucas 8 TR, 11 TR or 14 TR Integral

When you do get your wallet out, if you have extra lights etc, might be time for an upgrade - Range Rover classic 80A HD alternators are a straight fit for example.

Each to their own, but as a matter of course, if I was going to upgrade to anything much more than standard output, I would upgrade the wiring. If you didn't want to go as mad as 80A, you can get a 65/70A from a range rover (the ones without electric seats and the goodies)

How are you measuring the 5 amp output and what state of charge is your battery in when you are measuring it?

Hello to all you helpful folks in the forum - Yes the alternator was at fault after doing further checks with the techie info you very kindly provided, the old 16acr when taken off was found to have collapsed bearings, field windings broken due to the stator rubbing them through, & the carbon brushes were non existant, even a tension spring had gone !,
A new replacement (54a output ) was sourced from the internet £38 +pp
& fitted along with a new fanbelt. Job done, just proves again that the 30 + years old truck is easy & cheap to source parts for.

Many thanks again for all your input on this topic. long live Landyzone & the forum. jph1386. :)
