hi guys.

recently went to wales in my 90 for off roading weekend, got nice an muddy. since then battery keeps losing charge. looked at other posts an its only putting in 12.8v with engine running.

can you burn out an alternator?? reason i ask is that on the trip up to wales it overheated an engine raced its balls off..
also, is the 2.5td an 200tdi alt the same??

any help would be great..

cheers paul.

I just swapped my alternator. It might be worth taking the clips off the back and cleaning up the connections if they're all muddy and stuff. Also, I saw on an official land rover instruction thing (for series landies , on youtube), that you should loosen the fan belt before wading, but I've never gone wading so I don't know. All I know is that my brand new battery was providing more volts than the alternator was, and swapping it was dead easy. I did have to re-tap a bolt down from m8 to m6 to fit through the smaller tensioning hole on the alternator, whilst still having a head large enough for the tensioning plate thing, other than that, it was simple. I'm sure if you came across the same problem, you could get a big-headed m6 or drill the hole in the alternator to make it wider. Did you check the fan belt btw?

thanks for that. yeah checked fan belt. re-charged my battery which is at the right voltage but just checked the dash bulbs, no diode in the space where the battery light should illuminate. could it be as simple as a replacement??
