Hi Folks, in the last day or so I noticed my 04 TD5 was sounding laboured when starting her up. So I checked battery and voltage was low 11.6v. Started her up and the voltage stayed at 11.4V so I can see she’s not charging. I checked the fuses in the engine bay and when I saw F1 I was faced with no fuse but a metal plate(see pic)

Other than the non existent fuse, is there any other way of confirming a faulty alternator?

cheers

Ben

Volt meter across the battery terminals,
Start her up, see what it reads, then put all big draw electrical items such as headlights, fans at full speed, heated rear window.
Then rev it up a bit i.e. do not leave it at tickover, keep it steady, you should be getting about 14 volts min.

The flat plate in the fuse box, they're all like that sir. Does sound like a dodgy alternator (unless there's some dodgy connections somewhere) even if the battery was on it's last legs you'd still get 14.4V's across the terminals when running. I think intestinalworm replaced the brushes if you check out his previous posts.

Going by what the OP is saying it appears that they are aware of how to do basic voltage charging test of a vehicles battery, plus what to expect on a volt meter as a result.
As usual aways :rolleyes:

So it’s definitely the alternator. I’ve booked it in at the garage to be swapped. Is this a job I could have tackled myself or is it better off leaving it to someone with a ramp etc?

It doesn't hurt to be precise when answering a poster's question.
Instead of making assumptions.
My post did no harm and was not patronising.
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
