Hi all,

I had a new alternator installed today along with a new belt and ever since that the "Alternator Fault" comes up in the LCD display.

The car is fine no battery light etc. Any ideas?

It's a 1997 4.0SE with LPG.

I'm guessing that I need to take the battery terminal off and back on again ??

Cheers

Tris

i would have thought that the battery would have been disconnected while the swap was done! maybe worth as try, and incidently im going to be doing the same to mine tomorrow..

so maybe the new alternator is defective .

or maybe your just mean to disconnect the battery when disconnecting the alternator, i know the problems that r/rovers throw up when there not happy with voltages, like a reset sort of thing??? maybe!

i know when i disconnect the battery on me supra it clears fault codes and resets the ecu!!!!!

I have changed several alternators and ALWAYS disconnect the battery as spanners and high amps don't mix. I know it's a pain in the ass to reset the windows, sunroof, radio etc. but better to be safe than sorry. Chabrolly may have a point-not unknown to get a duff item even though it's brand new. Is your tacho working o.k.? (Not "pulsing") and are you getting over 14.5V at the battery above 2000rpm.Are you 100% sure it's the right alternator? as a mate bought a new one for his Vogue some years ago and the tacho wouldn't work-turned out it was the wrong one even though externally it was identical but the model no. didn't match by one digit. Got the same model and everything worked.

It's the right one, yes, been working a dream. It's got the right part number too etc - checked before buying it.

Tach is fine, no pulsing at all.

The "Alternator Fault" comes on only when I turn the ignition before actually cranking the engine and once the car is started I don't see it again until I switch on the next time I start it.

I'm fairly sure I should disconnect and re-connect to rectify. - Is there anything I need to be aware of before I re-connect? - Should I leave it disconnected for a few mins then re-connect and go for a drive for the ECU to re-calibrate etc ?

Cheers lads

Just disconnect and leave off whilst you have a cup of tea or a can of the black stuff, then reconnect and hopefully it should be o.k.
Then it's the usual reset of the windows, sunroof & radio code.
Let us know how you get on..........

DONT LEAVE YOUR KEYS IN THE IGNITION some times they lock when re-connecting the battery............

how did you get on with this, hope you didnt leave keys in ignition as it sometimes locks when battery reconnected!

maybe you did and thats why you havent posted back? :)

I have exactly the same problem, new battery all ok alternator went bad so changed it and now an alternator fault only when ignition is switched on before cranking. I disconnected all cables and replaced them and its no better. I uprated from a 100 amp to a 120amp and its charging perfect. Had it put on an autologic and no faults showing but the message is still there.
