Alternator belt gone - how long have I got?

Morning

So the squeak I could hear from under the bonnet of my 93 Defender 90 stopped this morning...alternator belt has snapped.

My battery is new, beefy and in good condition: how long do you think I can risk getting no drive to the alternator and fan? I am currently working away from home / tools and the car is now at work, 18 miles / 1 hour from where I am staying during the week. I have a 100 mile drive home on Friday (night, so lights on)

In an omnishambles of bad things, the oil light has come on and the heater is now not producing any heat, although it is blowing. Are these thing related?

I am wondering about simply biting the bullet and trying to find a garage close to work to do the belt today / tomorrow.

A great start to the day. Advice / commiseration appreciated.

What engine do you have..

I would NOT be driving it, personally.

If the belt also runs the water pump you have no / very reduced cooling. Which could be why you have no heat from the heater.

I realized after I posted that the water pump wouldn't be driven to power the heat.

I have now found a local independent Land Rover specialist who are doing the belt for me tomorrow - sounds a good fella - will report back
 
Yor battery would probably hold up BUT your water pump will not be working so you will boil and maybee crack head in a very short time soi get it fixed before you drive it
 
As said, the lack of coolant circulation would have been the main concern. Many years ago I kept an old petrol engined ambulance running for a week on just the battery after the dynamo failed, but that was in daylight & not using the starter but the crank handle (remember them?) Happy days :rolleyes:

I always carry a length of Fenner Link belt, it's cheap and easy to use.
Then when you have got the right replacement, simply unlink it and put it away again till next time.
