New Dilema:)

Now looking to fit Alloys and tubless tyres to my defender 110, Brassed off with constant punctures and tubes wearing out!

I have sourced some second hand and have the option of buying either a set of 4 or a set of 5.

If i purchase 4, can I still utilise the original Avon Rangemaster as a spare and still use it legally with tubless tyres that will be different. Or is this mix illegal? or am i  to even consider this!

So Gentlemen "What do you think"

When I run my all terain mud and snow tyres I can't get the spare into the back because it's too big (I have the spare carrier on the back of the tub bulkhead and dont want to move it any higher) and there has never been an issue at MOT time having a much smaller road tyre as the spare.

Look at space saver wheel/tyre combos you get now? What you are suggesting is using a proper fully road legal wheel tyre combo, so yes you are OK with that.

If there is a reasonable difference between the spare and the rest circumference wise I would not run it for long but as a spare you will be fine.

Buy the set of 5 , if you buy 4 you will end up having to stuff about swapping wheels lots more . The mixing of tread patterns is not a legal problem , its only tyre construction type that is governed by legislation bias/cross ply not with radial .
You will however increase risk by mixing tread patterns or tyre sizes, i.e. the vehicle may become unstable (more) under braking or when cornering , or in slippery/wet conditions . In the event of an ins claim may give them a chink to get their toe in . HTSH

Thanks for advice, In the end I settled for 4 as

1: cheeper on the wallet and "er in doors pacified" a bit !;)

2: They came with good condition tyres with plenty of tread.

I will have to suffer the swapping around a bit and moan every time i do them :D whilst cursing and swearing !
