nice, will keep my eyes open for somehting suitable down the metal yard near me. Re-doing my garage workshop this year and could do with a proper welding surface rather than just doing it on the floor......

It's open mesh flooring used for gantry walk ways and stairs etc so anything under 900mm wide is no use so you'll probably get it for free or a few quid for the tea tin. Just threw a load of it in the skip today actually

yeah cool, the place near me is a scrap recycler and a demo contractor, they always have stuff like that in. Only thing is you are only allowed to take stuff thats reachable without climbing, they do let you chop stuff up though if you bring your own tools or will do it for you. Pretty good place, fecking grumpy guys though took me a few trips before they would give me the time of the day!

Cheers will keep an eye out

Wish there was a proper scrap yard up here, then again maybe not, it would just multiply the number of projects I have!

wow, epic build and fabrication skills mate, well done:clap2:

Where in Uist did you live? I worked in the Dark Island for a couple of years back in the mid 90's, haven't been back for years but keep meaning to go for a holiday sometime.

Just read this start to finish. A brilliant read and some brilliant fabrication/welding! :)

Look forward to seeing this progress ;)

Thank you :D

Been having bolt issues today, namely that this island only sells about 3 different sizes of UNC  Not keen to use the metric substitute sizes as, at the moment, it's for suspension bushes so don't want it slopping about on a slightly too small bolt.

Thanks Matt :D

Had lived in north & south as well as Benbecula by the time I left. Oh aye the good old DI  What was your job when you worked there?

I worked behind the bar when Big Ronnie was bar manager and the military base was still fully manned. The place was bouncing, that place taught me to work all day and drink all night. We had many all night parties on the beach behind the hotel.

God knows how we did it and survived.

Ah yes the good old beach parties :D

In fact I drove this Defender (along with my mate in his Suzuki SJ) from the pier at stinky bay to that beach behind the DI. Was great fun, some rocky points to navigate over (and winch an SJ ) and some big flat open areas to play about on. Then we drove up that beach, across the football pitch and parked up out side the bar for a pint :D

We drove that beach many times. I got to know all the lads on the base so well we could go on to camp and "borrow" one of the military landies to go hunting for firewood on the beach.:D

Fabulous work Dan, not being a welder I went the new chassis route for a lot less rust than you had, I shall watch the rest of the rebuild with interest.
I'm also another ex part timer of hill between two fords, 1971-75 when my father was posted there, although the council sent me to school in Inverness to get my SCEs so I didn't learn the Gaelic unlike my brother who went to Balivanich primary. And then again in 1983 -85, when some comedian in the RAF sent me there to work on the radar ( the old one on the airfield) no I didn't apply for it!
The Q
The thread update while I was typing this, I've been out in the lobster boat that used to moor in stinky bay near the croft , my dad used go out regularly with them lobster fishing, he has the scar on his hand to prove it! When the lobster objected!! I too have spent many an hour I the DI which of course I was too young for and it handnt been built on my first trip out.
I also note Barmatt that I too have finally stopped travelling around and ground to a halt in North Norfolk!
