First post guys.
Ive had a search through the forum but can't find a solution to my problem (I'm sure its there !!) Bought a disco 6 weeks a go it was fine, then parked it up for 3 weeks due to work, went back to it and it would not open with the key or start, put jump leads on it but it would still not turn over but started with a tow so I thought it must be a flat battery. Fully charged the battery, fob would still not work, changed the battery in the fob, still not work, opened with the key but will not even turn over so I assumed its immobilised, locked it with the key then the alarm went off !! it was late at night and I could not get the alarm off so I dissconected the battery. Next day connected the battery but the alarm is still going off, how do I switch the alarm off, do I need a fob or will it switch off with the EKA code, I need to shut the noise off before I do anything? Thanks.

Thanks for the reply, I have the EKA code and will try it tomorrow should that turn the alarm off? I will read the other link you posted now.

The EKA code will remobilise it but you'll have to use it every time it gets immobilised again though once remobilised if you find somebody with proper tester you can disable the immobiliser for good or try to fix the issue which might be the roof receiver cos it's the most common

I have removed the RF unit from under the headliner today and let it dry in the house as I read condensation or water is a problem, I will put it back tomorrow then hook up the battery and try the fob, if not I will try the EKA code to get it mobile, where I live and what I use it for I could probably never lock it again. But I'm sure I will get it hooked up and find out the problem or as you say remove the immobiliser. Thanks for the reply.

Re fitted the RF unit, hooked up the battery with the alarm going off, key fob would still not work, locked the door with the key and that switched off the noise, tried the fob at loads of places around the car it would do nothing, went through the EKA sequence and after third attempt, 2 beeps, after five minutes the dash light went off, opened the door and put the key in to start it, Nothing, totally dead !!! So I assume I have a problem now to the starter or the battery I fully charged yesterday and has been disconnected is not holding a charge. This is my first Disco, do faults persist there whole ownership? I have to admire you die hard owners tenacity, I'm demented already :)

Since the EKA seems to work, once it's entered correctly it would indicate that the immobiliser side of the circuit works as it should. The problem would appear to be in the RF side of the system or the connection between the RF and the immobliser sides of the system.
You remarked that you've replaced the battery in the fob so the obvious questions here would be
  1. is it a good battery?
  2. is the little red LED on the fob working when you press either button?
  3. did you inadvertently disturb or damage anything on the fob circuit board? and
  4. when you replaced the cover of the fob are you sure that the switches are free to operate correctly?
Beyond watching the little red LED on the fob, there is very little else that the average owner can do to check the correct operation of the key fob, so do you have a second key fob available you could try?
You've also remarked that you removed the RF receiver to indoors to dry it. Are you sure that the circuit board inside the box is dry and that no moisture damage has occured. Moisture can cause small copper tracks on the printed circuit board to rot away completely. A classic sign of such damage is patches of verdigree (a greenish blue "growth") where the PCB has been wet.
When the RF receiver is refitted, ensure that the bolt holding it in position is clean since it provides the earth to the dircuit. Check also that all the wires on the multiway plug to the RF receiver are intact.
There is a proximity detection circuit on the ignition switch which checks that the correct key has been inserted in the barrel, this is one reason why I've suggested that some damage might have occurred to the key fob. Also, when you tried to start the vehicle was it absolutely, totally dead or could you hear a relay clicking and trying to operate?

Brand new decent battery as I read the cheap ones are rubbish, red light works on both buttons, I was very careful replacing the battery but its possible I disturbed something, but have never in the past and I've changed a few for other cars, I never got a second key when I purchased the vehicle ( big mistake I know).
The RF box could be damp inside I only took the top cover off I never actually took the full circuit board out the bottom casing, the reason I did not want to do that was in case I damaged it, should I remove it completely from its back plastic box?
When fitting I cleaned all the contact surfaces and the bolt to ensure a decent earth.
Vehicle was dead nothing clicking, no small red light flashing so I assume the immobiliser was off, hence the reason I'm thinking a break from either the battery to the starter or a bad earth, I have the battery off and charging it again so I will fit it later, put the EKA code in again and see if the vehicle will start with a tow as it done in the opening post.
Thanks fro the reply.

If the red light was not on the dash. when turning the key and you DID NOT hear a click from the starter relay. get underneath and check to see if the lucar ( spade) connector is still on the starter motor, pull it off and reconnect it, then try again.

Cheers

Yes done point 8, in within 30 seconds and turned to position 2 then tried to start it, I seems like a starter problem, I will check that later I have to go to work now, if it starts with a tow later than at least I know its something to do with the starter, I still need to get it working off the fob though because I'm not going through this EKA thing ever time I want to go somewhere.
Thanks

Started with a tow, so I have the key fob signal to sort (bought another RF unit so see if that helps, it gets delivered this week) then the starter problem to resolve, getting there, I also noticed since its been parked for a while in the one place a leak in what looks like the steering box...oh will this pleasure never end :)

Sorted !! Cleaned all the terminals on the starter and it fired up on the key, took it for a decent drive, I have to say they are nice to drive. I have a recon kit coming as I have another starter sitting so I will fit that and wait and see what happens, if it does it again I will stick the other starter on it. On to the leak at the steering box :)

Sounds good,

the top nut on the starter is fun!!!.......if you want to make life easy.. Remove the wires, ( battery disconnected obviously), Remove the two bottom bolts first, then slide the starter out as you unscew the nut. .use a 15mm socket with an adaptor to 1/4 / 3/8 drive. Allow for extensions to get the ratchet past the end of the starter.

Cheers
