Hi, just had a new condensor fitted to my P38 from Auto-Aircon in Redditch. OEM part is ~£260 ex-vat I'm told, whereas non-OEM is ~£130 ex vat. I had the non-OEM condensor plus re-gas plus labour plus vat all for around £270. I can thoroughly recommend the guys there - they certainly know what they're doing.
Cheers, Richard.

Was thinking of replacing the condenser myself, is the anything to watch out for? Also, when replaced, need I get the system gassed immediately?

The air con won't/should'nt run if its low on gas, which it will be once you have it to bits(press the schreader valves first to dump any gas in the lines, but i did'nt tell you that!)
I just bought a refill kit off ebay, £30 it comes with the refridge gas, oil, pressure guage and a leak detecting die.
Simple to use:D

Got a few quotes as the powers that be has other ideas for the usage of my time. . .
They're coming back @ £400'ish.
Is this reasonable? Or should i continue shopping round?

Can anybody recommend an aircon co.?

Should i replace the Receiver/Drier @ the same time??

blue skies

ps cheers Avro, planning to do the job myself now
words of wisdom much appreciated ;-)

to be honest im not sure how those refill kits work. i do know when i had my condensor replaced my specialist used this special machine that basically, in a nutshell (n the way i understood it), sucked everything out of the system, like any water vapour etc etc and held the vacum to check for leaks and it then put the oil and refrigirant in. the machine then checked everything was ok and voila, working a/c. i think to totally evacuate the system you need this machine and any a/c place should be able to sort you out. i may be totally way off the mark here but as nobody has replied i thought i would chime in and say what my experience was.

im a a/c engineer with a p38, the refill kits are a waste of time and money you need to have it done right
The system needs tobe pressure tested with nitrogen and have a vacum pump on the system to remove the air from in it which contains moisture. Moisture in the system will make it fail big time and after all that you can then regas the system with virgin gas of r134a or a drop in gas for the classics.
If any one needs any help then gety in touch with me as i may be able to assist as i travel over most of southern england:cool:

Been to LR and got the aircon serviced (£59 incl fVAT), but they say there's something wrong as it won't go below 17 degree C.
they recon the compressor isn't running long enough?
('O' rings replaced during rebuild & no leaks / pressure drops detected)

now i can think of a few things, but is it worth it. . .

answers on a postcard & all that

blue skies :)

strike two:
lr really want my money!!
they say the cause of the problem is over pressure & they WON'T let me have it back with gas in the system, unless they can fix the problem

GGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!

strike three:
they really, really want my money!
there’s a faulty valve in the system

not in stock and its going to cost £350~ish
(that’s parts & labour)

~ it's got to go!!!!
it's a money pit

i just had this the other day.. bloke said it was over pressure and the compressure was *****d. i'd topped it up with a recharge kit using an inline gauge, so i knew how much pressure was in it.
anyway this A/C expert was pricing up a new compressure and dryer. i noticed these rubber flaps on the fan cowling. which didn't seem to be doing much. i tried to open one just to see what would happen and it snapped off in my hand.
when i checked the rest they snapped off aswell. and the air con temp dropped quicker than a whore's knickers.
i assume that because the rubber had harden and the flaps couldn't flap the air from the leccy fan had no way of getting past the rad and condensor, so it couldn't cool the gas and there by giving a high pressure that was too high.
so the point of all this wittering is.... if you have high pressure and no coldness check to see if you have hard flaps, it has the same effect as a blocked condensor

Ooo i like the sounds of that & sounds about right for an LR!!! Where are these flaps?
I knew the compressor was spot on, so they couldn't lay the blame there - but the TXV(??) valve is "suspect"
Something smells fishy. Very fishy indeed. Positively tuna casserole.

:-|

They may as well say:
'Please drop your pants and bend over the table by that unnecessarily large hammer action masonry drill'

oophs!! i forgot to mention it was on a jag.. ..
on the jag the mech fan is to one side of the rad and the leccy one is on the other. leccy fan pushes air thro and mech fan pulls air through. so you have a bit down the left hand side with rubber flaps on it, well it used to have rubber flaps.
if your vehicle has them all you need to do is open bonnet and inspectagate the fan cowling. they look like small rubber catflaps.

if you have them and find them make sure they do bend and open . mines were rock solid and snapped like a cheese cracker
