Think you can take it for granted that if it engages and is turning, It is generally ok. Internal failure usually sees them seize up solid.

If the aircon is not working, it's probably due to that condensor you bodged last year!

The condenser bodge is fine, the compressor kicks on fine, so compressor ok, 3 way switch ok? Both pipes get hot tho !!!

Both pipes being the same temperature usually indicates a lack of gas in the system. One should be very hot to the touch and the other freezing cold when the compressor is running. Best bet is to get it to an aircn specialist who can, apart from checking the system, check the pressure build up with the compressor is running.
