air suspension

Hi can any one help I'm having problems with air suspension on my discovery series 2

Whats the problem?

The sls does not seem to be working automatically also can't raise it manually either

Silly question.

Does your disco have rear air suspension?

Yes it does unfortunately

So the button on the dash does not work?
Do you have the key fob?
Does it lower over time?
What do you mean it does not work automaitcally? does it not self level when you add a load in the back?

I press button it chimes 3 times and it does not flash on dash at all also when you start discovery it's suspose to level automatically I haven't got remote adjust on fob

Are all doors closed? when you press the dash button?

Yes all dots closed when pressing button

Sounds like you need some investigation of the system, know anyone with a nanocom? are you sure all door switches are working correctly? Interior light works as it should?

I'm sitting in it right now all lights working normally pulled fuse from under steering and that had not blown now going to look under bonnet and don't know any one with a nanocom

Are you sure you're not expecting too much height increase. The car only rises about 20-25mm when started and about the same on the manual button. Very hard to detect from the drivers seat.

In my 32 years of driving I've driven landrovers all my life and have read hand book and believe me it's doing all the opposite of what it says in the book so I know there is something wrong with air suspension

The SLS on the Disco II is one of the easiest to sort

From experience, although I don't normally use the "off road" setting is that if the vehicle remains level after driving and parking it then there's very little wrong with the air suspension. I say this because as it's being driven there will be natural loss of pressure which will be reflated by the compressor automatically; otherwise the vehicle will steadily drop further and further.

It's very difficult to detect the suspension changing its level from the driver's seat but you might see the front appear to go down a bit (yes, go down as the chassis rotates marginally around the front axle) if you watch carefully when you start the car. Another thing you might notice as you start the engine is a slight "grumble" or growling sound which appears to come from under the floor behind the front passenger's seat. That's the compressor running.

The engine must be running, not just the ignition switched on for the air suspension to do its stuff, and no you won't see or hear anything while you add more and more loads.

The system actually works by the suspension ECU monitoring the signals from the "ride height sensors"; there's one on each end of the rear axle and then compares that value to the value set in its memory which was set when the suspension was calibrated. As those values change, the compressor is called to pressurise one side or the other to restore the values to match the calibrated values. The "off road" setting just adds a further 25 mm to the calibrated level and calls the compressor to inflate.

When set, the "off road" setting will automatically reset to normal ride height when a speed of 18 mph is reached.

Thanks looks like I'm into a dealer tomorrow to get it checked

One word of warning if you're going to the main stealer .... don't even mention the fob for "adjusting" the suspension. It's an optional extra and I've seen them on the net for about 70 quid second user, the dealer will probably want well over a ton for one.

At the risk of wringing the neck of this topic beyond where it'll go, you've now mentioned problems with the doors and the central locking.

A number of posts have already talked about the need to have all the doors closed before the suspension can work. This doesn't mean just closed, the BCU must detect that the doors are closed before it signals the central locking system and the SLABS ECU for the suspension.

So maybe, just maybe there's your trouble.
