Air in fuel system help !

After changing the lift pump I went for a spin

.It was driving lovely for about 5 miles then started running rough and would not rev then it cut out. To cut a long story short I got the RAC out and he was less than useless. He tried to bleed air out of filter but gave up a said I would need to take to a garage. Have had to leave it on the street about 2 miles from home until I can get to it tommorow.

bleed air at front pump banjo bolt ,iwould by pass seedimentor and check sender unit under boot floor

If this is a TD5 they are meant to self bleed (well according to the Haynes manual!). However I follow the advice on www.discovery2.co.uk / Diesel Fuel Filter

You will see that there is a sequence for bleeding the filter here. I use this - it works.

Sorry mate its a 94 300 tdi . Its drawing air in from somewhere . Will tick over but when reved it dies. Loads of air coming from fuel filter bleed screw. Cant see any leaks on new lift pump connections.Undid the banjo bolt when idle but no fuel came through. Going to try sedimentor seals next.

Anyone bypassed the sedimenter with 8mm-10mm pushfit connector.I think you would need the inserts. Can you just cut the pipes at sedimenter and join at that point.

you can use 8mm push fit or just slide rubber hose over 50mm and hose clip go from passenger side on sender top of tank to drivers rear wheel arch in front of sedimentor,

RAC have just recovered me, She's sat out back looking sorry for herself.

She will tickover but when driven the engine dies.I had a slight problem cutting out and juddering at junctions but with new lift pump the problem is much worse. Must be pulling air through at a greater rate. It must be sender flow /return pipes /sedimenter or connection at lift pump. Could be a hole in pickup pipe high up because didn,t have problem when fuel tank was full.

return pipe have no effect it will be as said sender unit the one nearest passenger side sedimentor ,or pipe between, i do alot from sender missing out sedimentor ,fuel filter has drain anyway,to inside pipe front rear wheel ,allways in goo nlck past that point forward

So far have tried to remove sender top but its stuck fast and really difficult to get a purchase to turn it. Did you mean sleeve a piece of 5mm inside the fuel pipe to bypass sedimenter ? Paddocks do fuel sender unit for £55 + vat . Do you reckon new sender and bypass sedimenter will sort this out.

yes new sender then cut out old feed pipe and join past sedimentor ,sleeve at join and hose clip at sender, return unless dripping fuel can go back as was

Ok now we're gettin somewhere. So need sender unit , Where do you get fuel pipe ,sleeves from ? Jubilee clips ok for joint? I apreciate your help. Ive had a nightmare two days with this. Over two hours sat waiting to be recovered today , freezing cold and ****ing down.

Have you tried disconnrcting fuel pipe tank side of sedimentor, fit piece of fuel pipe to the union & drop into a can of diesel then try to see if it will run. That way you will see if sender is causing problem. If you fit a clear fuel pipe between lift pump & filter you will see if problem is caused by air in system. Also you could try the other side of sedimentor & direct to lift pump as a process of elimination before you buy parts not needed. Is it manual or auto?

Cheers dave will look at that. I think james is right though the sender pipes dont look too good.
