If the motor has been running rich or the plugs started to break down then the coil starts to suffer. When coil charges up it still has to release it to ground so if it can’t do it through the leads and plugs it starts to get very hot and they will discharge through the body of the coil sometimes you may see hairline cracks or burn marks on the bottom of the coil packs.
If you look at it at night you will see all the arcing and sparking that you would never see in daylight.
